I loved the mercenary camps and such in Far Cry. Once mutants popped in I quit the game. Forever.

So maybe I will play Far Cry 2...

X2 same thing i did.

im tempted to reinstalled Far Cry, to see how it looks now with the newer patches and at max settings. back in the day i had a fx 5600 that barely ran that game.

It's great to read other people not liking the aliens/mutants. I thought I was mostly alone.
I loved the first 6 levels of Crysis. Played those level over and over again on all 4 difficulty levels. The furthest I've gotten is level 10 on the easy mode. Aliens and flying Vtols just doesn't do it for me.
Just bought a used copy of Far Cry. I like it, but the mutants - bleh... On level 12 (easy) so far.

Good god, you guys are putting way, WAY too much faith into Ubisoft for this one. Keep in mind FC2 is being developed by the same branch that did Far Cry Instincts... They also did Assassin's Creed. So if repitition is your thing I'm sure you'll love it.

I liked the alien component in Crysis since it added variety to the game and prevented things from getting repetitive. The alien base also had some very cool and unique level design. However, that whole portion was very linear compared to the first 2/3 of the game. It would have been much better if they maintained the same open-endedness with these maps, even if it came at the cost of the "cinematic" feel.

the whole game was repetitiv and the AI is as dumb as a box of rocks.

Regardless of if they add any sci-fi elements, the gameplay isn't going to be nearly as good as either Far Cry or Crysis.
LMAO. Crysis was a horrible game. Far Cry was "ok" but nothing great. Just two tech demos.
Everyone says Crysis is horriblle? I enjoyed it as far as being an FPS, not just for the graphics.
There's bound to be haters. It has the highest rating far as PC games go.
OMG, you did NOT just evoke PC Gamer's hysterical overrating of Crysis as a defense, did you?

I'm not one of those "PC Gamer is bribed! I only trust message board fanboy reviews!" people, but it has to be mentioned that PCG has a bad tendency to be so excited to get the first review of a hot title, they routinely give an extra 5-10 points to their scores. I don't think they are explicitly trading access for scores quid pro quo, but subconsciously gift it some points that they end up regretting when they sober up.

I bought Crysis the day it came out nearly a year ago and still haven't finished it, it's so boring and stupid. Over than rig-crushing visuals and a cloaking suit, it's nothing special. I just got to the alien section and I don't care. A good game should make you want to press ahead and see what's next - Crysis absolutely fails. 98% my arse!

The mercenary camps were great. Plus there was a certain degree of realism that came with hiding in the bushes and throwing rocks in opposite directions to confuse enemies. All the mutants in later parts of the game ruined it.

It seems like you are making the leap that two Crytek games sucked, so a game from Ubisoft will suck too? Or will it suck for some other reason, like the term "Far Cry" in it's title?

Ya, I didn't see any hints at aliens/zombies/mutants from the few trailers I saw. The gun buying system sounds awesome though. Kinda like Kingpin?

Far Cry 2 looks alright, but Fallout 3 is the game I'm most looking forward to. Mutants make sense in that game 😀

I've played Far Cry 2 on the xbox 360, and I liked it. After playing for a few hours I came to the conclusion that they found the right balance between a free roaming shooter, and a real fps, where you can just shoot people and blow shit up. First of all, you have a primary, secondary and a special weapon. You can only have 1 of each. Theres plenty of different weapons for each class, but all guns share the same ammo, so you have primary/secondary and special ammo. That's dumbed down to some extent, but it also allows the game to remain a real FPS. Opponents don't have to be shot a 100 times to kill them, although I think they can take a lot of .50 rounds before they die, then again, a single shotgun kills, like you would expect.

Free roaming wise, you earn diamonds by doing missions, with those diamonds you can buy guns, upgrades for the guns, but also a stealth suite, a mortar or upgrades to quickly repair a vehicle. You have to buy weapon crates as well, one for secondary/primary and special guns. If you then find a gun, and store them ONCE in your weapons crate, they will be stored in your save house, where you can always pick up a gun you have put in the weapons crate. Besides that, weapons do break down, I found this weird shotgun-like or heavy caliber gun, but it looked like junk, smudged with dirt and scratches on it, and after shooting it like 50-75 times, it just broke down in half. That's what you get for picking up junk ...

The fire, the much much lauded fire, it actually does look good, and behaves pretty well too. I was mildly dissapointed when I parked my truck on the grass, lit the grass, to not see it explode, it did take a fair deal of damage though. But, the fire didn't exactly rage across the vehicle, it more or less dissapeared and started again BEHIND the vehicle. Funny thing is, when a vehicle DOES blow up near a tree, you'll see leaves blowing in the wind. Fire also throws up sparks, and could lit other things if the wind is blowing in the right direction ...

I also noticed the healing system has been dumbed down? I thought you would get animations for all kinds of different wounds, but right now all your character does is stick a needle in his arm, and he gets healed ... Your character also has malaria btw, which you have to BUY and swallow pills for once in a while.

Also, I see a lot of you talk about AI, I think the AI is pretty good in Far Cry 2. You could lit the grass for example, and the gaurds of a building will all go like, wtf is happening here, and they'll all come outside and look at the fire, trying to find out whats happening. If they actually loose sight of you, they'll keep looking, but if you toss a grenade they won't suddenly know where you are. I liked messing around with them, you'll hear them say like: "He's out there, it's just 1 guy", or "did you see him, where is he, I can't find him" etc etc.

Not sure what difficulty level I was playing at, but they managed to shoot me just fine, if you for example drive your truck into a road encampment, and there 3/4/5 bad guys around, you're going to get yourself killed. I managed to drop a few of them with my .50, but the gun overheated, yes it does overheat, not suddenly, grey smoke first, then black, then it will stop firing, and they killed me pretty fasy ...

So that's my mini preview. Graphics wise I liked it, so the textures aren't as good as Crysis, but I'm hoping the PC will have better textures. PC version is also dx10, yet the xbox 360 version looked pretty good to me, saw no framerate drops. Overall the surroundings just looked very good, with sun rays glaring through the trees etc. You'll also see the grass waving in the wind, while the moon is shining down on it, in patches because of the clouds. Maybe not the graphical powerhouse Crysis is, but it's still the best looking game the Xbox 360 has seen so far.
