I'm looking to read the opinions of all those who finished Far Cry 2 through it's final scene.

I JUST finished spending 43 hours to complete the game on it's "easy" setting.

I have mixed feeling. Didn't care for it much for the first few hours (I'm a slow learner), but once I got the hang of it I started to get addicted. It could have been GREAT - maybe the best ever with a few tweaks, but was still very good. Well worth the $18 I paid via a Amazon.com special. I'll probably play it again on my next computer I build on a higher difficulty level.

Maximum PC gave it a "9" rating.
My all time favorite game is GTA: VC which I give a "10" out of 10, to give an example of my preferences.
Far Cry 2 I'd give a very solid "8". Better than Far Cry 1 (no F**king mutants), and Crysis (no F**king aliens), and roughly equal to Max Payne and GTA: SA - only with MUCH better graphics.

Anybody else who finished the game care to share their opinions???

I liked it, ending wasn't what i expected

I love the free-roaming jungle feel to it. the map / environment are what make it a great game.

I enjoyed it

It was decent, there's just too many bandits outposts, and the "free roaming" wasn't what I thought. But the sounds are certainly great, all of them, except for the voice acting which is absolutely horrendous. It could indeed have been much better of a game.

I have a feeling you wont get many opinions since you want people who actually finished it, so far I am one of them.

I've read so many negative things on Anandtech about the game, and so many good reviews by the professional reviewers, that I want to try and figure out why the discrepancies...

I finished it, enjoyed just wandering through the jungles and savannah. Silent sniping with the dart gun was fun. And the end kind of blew my mind a bit, probably because I stayed up till 5 am finishing it.

I think to like the game, you have to have some degree of patience and tolerance for whatever it is that people disliked about the game.

My one major complaint is that I played through as the Asian character, and all the faction dudes kept calling me "China."

you drive then kill some people, drive, kill some people, drive, rinse , repeat

If they didn't make you repeat the same thing over and over it would be a great game.
The only way I could endure the whole thing was to cheat with a trainer that enabled one shot kills and infinite vehicle health

I just started playing but I think they could of had a great new ip if they named it something besides farcry. It just doesn't make sense to me that it has that name. Ohh the rusty weapon thing is cool but why are all of the mounted guns like always perfect with unlimited ammo? I just roll up somewhere and project a wall of lead on anything that moves.

:thumbsup:

I didn't bother finishing the game. I'm 53% into the game though.

Silent sniping was fun...until the AI cheats...

I loved how the factions called me China because of the Asian character. That is so bad ass! I mean, he has a freakin' dragon tattoo on his left arm!

I would say that my preferences would be very close to the OP's. GTA VC was one of my all time fav's as well as Max Payne.

Although I do differ on Far Cry 1. I thought the mutants made sense for that game even though when I first saw them I remember being very disappointed. But after playing it thru to completion several times, I actually think it's the second best FPS I've ever played (Golden Eye on N64 being first).

Far Cry 2 reminded me alot of a GTA type game except that you are unable to simply roam the open areas peacefully. You are constantly fighting thru check points and roving patrols which makes the game so tedious. I don't think I would have ever even tried to finish the game if it were not for the quick save feature. Traveling thru 3 or 4 check points and fighting off several patrols on the way to a mission point, only to get killed and have to do that all over again would have been too much. I used the hell out of F5. Overall I think the game was decent, but that's it. Maybe a 6.5/10.

Every game should have a quick save feature.
My F5 gave out in Act 2, so I had to manually save by going through Esc and selecting save - far more tedious. By Act 3 it was taking close to a minute to make a save. Not sure why.
If you just speed through a check point then you usually only have to kill one vehicles worth of bad guys that have chased you down...

Just finished installing GTA: 4. That was the worst installation process of all time. Who ever came up with "Games For Windows LIVE" needs something bad to happen to them - LOL. At least the game plays well so far.

I'll tell you.......they should have just named it Grand Theft Auto: Farcry 2. I can see how some would like it. However, the outposts (kill, rinse, repeat) and the arcade like AI kind of dodging robotically in and out of trees (almost like whack a mole or something) killed it for me. I only play FPS and love the genre, but I only got to 8% and sold it...... Nice graphics though :D Usually that would be enough for me to hang on for a few hours, but not this time, lol.

Outposts should have stayed empty once you killed everybody there, and the free roam wasn't very great. You couldn't go very far off road before reaching a wall which would make sneaking past those annoying outposts pretty much impossible.

And there was too much driving. For pretty much every mission you had to drive across almost the entire map. I found myself driving around the border half the time because even though the distance was longer, it took way less time because you didn't have to clear out outposts, and you didn't run into any random patrol cars.

Oh, and weapons degraded way too fast.

I still enjoyed the game, just some parts were kind of annoying.

I just finished it... IMHO, I think the $20 I paid was too much.

The good:
Game engine is great. The graphics are great, game is fast loading, no loading times except for fast travels and great fire effects. I can imagine some great mods could be made from this engine, if SDK tools ever get released.

The bad:
Gameplay sucks -
* Infinitely respawning outposts
* annoying and pointless random car encounters.
* bad AI - The AI is pretty wild. It goes from guards not noticing you standing next to them, to guards spotting you and shooting you through an opaque wall of foliage.
* meaningless buddies.
* weapons degrading too rapidly. It would've been better if they included a measurement of how degraded the weapon was rather than trying to figure out how rusty it was.
* weak story.
*** TRAVEL.

I finished the game. The ending could have been much much better. It seemed as if the devs were trying to meet a deadline and just ended the game... awkwardly. Oh well, the rest of the game was great.

A lot of complaints about the outposts re spawning enemy. I agree it was annoying at times.
BUT, in any real world conflict once you kill the enemy in a particular location and then leave that location unoccupied, new enemy tend to move into that territory. So as far as realism goes - I can't fault the developers for that.

Disappointing ending for sure.
