Lots of people are asking what the differences between the LOTRs DVD sets that are being released. Here is an FAQ from IGN that should help those of you that STILL don't understand... understand

Q. Will the movie be all on one disc or will I have to stop it in the middle to change discs like Pearl Harbor?

A. There is only a finite amount of space on a DVD; even a dual layered one. Since the extended cut is about three and a half hours long, and the disc includes both Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 6.1 soundtracks in addition to multiple commentary tracks, there simply isn't enough room in the 9 gigs of space on a single dual layered disc. That's why it is spread across two discs.

Q. What is different between the extended cut and the theatrical cut?

A. There is roughly a half hour of additional footage edited back into the film along with new Howard Shore music to accompany the scenes. Some of this footage includes:

-An extended arrival in Hobbiton where we see Bilbo writing his book.

-Hobbit musical numbers including Pippen singing in The Prancing Pony.

-A scene after the departure from Bree where Aragorn is singing, in Elvish, as the Hobbits sleep.

-Upon arrival in Rivendell we see Aragorn and Boromir's meeting near the Shards of Narsil.

-In Rivendell, Aragorn visits his mother's grave.

-The Council of Elrond is extended a bit with Gandalf speaking the Dark Speech.

-The Fellowship's departure from Rivendell is extended.

-Gandalf shares some advice with Frodo before they head up the mountain.

-There's more footage inside Moria before the fight in Balin's tomb.

-The arrival in Lorien is extended a bit, possibly to build up the Legolas/Gimli friendship.

-The "Gifting" scene has been restored along with the element of Gimli falling in love with Galadriel.

-Upon leaving Lothlorien, we see Gollum following the Fellowship down the river.

-Finally, some minor additions will be seen in many shots including one such as Lurtz licking the blood off the dagger after he pulls it out of his leg during his fight with Aragorn.

Q. Will the theatrical cut of Fellowship be included on the four-disc set?

A. No, only the extended cut. If you want the original version of the movie, you'll need to pick up the current release.

Q. Are the extras on both sets the same?

A. No. The four-disc set has two discs filled with special features created specifically for that release. None of the extras from the two-disc set are duplicated on the extended DVD. In fact, as of this writing it hasn't been confirmed if the trailers will or will not appear on the four-disc set.

Q. What's this I hear about a five-disc release?

A. The five-disc release is actually the special Gift Set. It includes the same four-disc set in addition to the National Geographic LOTR special as well a two Argonath Book Ends and some trading cards all packaged in a widow box designed by Alan Lee.

Q. How much will each set be?

A. The four-disc will set you back about $39.99, while the Gift Set goes for about $79.99. Naturally, you'll be able to find both for about $10 or $15 less if you look around.

Yes it will.

Glad you posted because without lying I have received at least 15-20 PMs from people asking questions about the EE...:Q

One thing they're wrong on is this:
The four-disc will set you back about $39.99, while the Gift Set goes for about $79.99. Naturally, you'll be able to find both for about $10 or $15 less if you look around.
You can already pre-order the 4 disc for around 25-27 i think, and the 5 disc will be available for 50 or less.

Son of a bitch! I was expecting Tom Bombadil and the fight with the wolves where Gandalf lights up a whole forrest and the fellowship tramping through the swamp at night while Gandalf and the wraiths duel on top of the mountain. Extended edition my ass!

The movie sucked in comparison to the book. The only reason I considered it even halfway decent is cause I expected all the cut out scenes from the book to be in the "extended" edition. Wow, now we get to see Bilbo writing and Pippin dancing and a long farewell from Rivendell. Wooo freakin hoo.

to include everything in the book would take far more then 4 hours. It can not be done with in reason. So yes there has to be compromises.

I'm with him, I wanted to see Bombadil.
Not like I'm not buying the Gift Set though ;) I was really pissed to not see the giving of the gifts from Galadriel.

Yeah... I'm glad that they are putting simple things like that back in.... The other stuff with Bombadil would have required a whole nother actor and so much more time work wise and in the movie... it just wouldn't work. I'm find with what it is and will be.

Maybe 20 years down the road when home movie making is what hollywood movie is today we can make our own additions :p

My question is simple: Did they include all of the footage that Peter Jackson originally envisioned in this extended cut?

I'd be mighty pissed if they release another version sometime in the future that has some kind of director's cut that has even more footage. I hate buying the same movie more than once!!! :|
