Depends on what you mean by "better". 2 80mm can push more air than a single 120mm, but a good 120mm can push more air for less noise than 2 80mm, at least that is how it has worked in my cases.

Is this for exhaust? Intake? What case? Do you have to mod it to mount a 120mm fan?

for less noise, 120mm will move more air. If you use 2 80mm tornados, you will move more air than a 120mm fan but with the cost of your brain exploding from the noise.
 
yeah its either going to be for a blowhole or a side panel mod.

so far my rig is pretty silent, i have a Zalman psu, and i got heatpipe cooling on its way from newegg.

can anyone tell me some REALLY quiet but practical 120 mm fans.

Globe/Acoustifan/Enermax are basically all the same, with the only difference being that Acoustifan uses a hard clear plastic.

The Nexus is very quiet but expensive and doesn't push much air even at 12V.

Sleeve-bearing fans are generally quieter than ball.

I got some 120mm Globes from Coolcases for $8 each (1 was DOA unfortunately), and they're all quiet and undervolt smoothly.
 
The YS-Tech, Sunon and Silverstone fans I've been working with have no motor noise or next to none. But they push 104 to 125 CFMs. If an Enermax or Panaflo pushed 100 CFMs, the "noise-level" would be just as great. That's my compromise between cool and quiet. Your compromise is more between quiet and cool. 🙂

Looking at it closely, you could actually find two 80mm fans to push 150CFM at a noise level that would permanently damage both your ears and your sanity. So that statement is true. You actually can get two 80mm fans that push a little more air than a single 120. But for a difference of 25 CFMs in that range (100 to 150 CFM), the noise level for some of the 120mm alternatives are actually quite acceptable -- depending on "your compromise". 🙂
