Fantom GreenDrive 1TB External

I've been reading about this over at Slickdeals. Looks like according to people who have bought this on Newegg that it is a WD Green drive inside.

Can anyone rec a good sata card or adapter? My harddrive has sata controllers on the inside but nothing on the outside.

Would be really, really, really hot (not that it's not already) if you could get the 15% MS Livecash on top of the price/rebate. Mid 50's in price?

From what I get by reading around, the original warranty is from the mfg. of the external drive (OEM) and they provide the only warranty on the drive. Once you pop it open, it's your baby.

I think you can. Tigerdirect thru Live.com.

...if the offer is still there Monday.

That's why I posted the above post. Monday starts December and that's usually when deals drop out (1st day of the month) and then work themselves back in by the end of the month.

I don't know about other vendors, but I disassembled a WD Mybook 500GB after the power supply bit the bullet, the drive had a different model, serial and label and no apparent warranty for the bare drive itself, only as part of the Mybook enclosure. My guess is, take it out and you're on your own, I doubt you will find an OEM 5 year warranty drive inside.

However, if someone has taken one apart, and this is the case, might be worth posting as a hot deal heads up.

I'm trying to remember why I stopped buying from TD?

Well I guess it doesn't matter now as I'm certainly not buying that at $140.

Never heard of Fantom before. Anyone know of their reputation?

do a search and you'll find a lot of dissatisfied people. everything from welching on their rebates to selling 'new' items with refurbed drives inside, to horrible customer support.

my friend bought one from td a few months back. it arrived doa. at first i thought it was something else, but after a good deal of research i discovered a lot of others had similar issues

I just got the cyber Monday email and it lists the drive for 139 so I don't think this is going to happen at $70. Oh well.
