Fantastic deals on new Tyan server barebones

FYI folks, fleaBay has auctions left and right for matched pairs of single core 940 Opterons on the mega cheap, like <$50 for a pair. I was able to nab a dual core Opteron 275 for ~$50 the other day. PC3200 REG ECC DDR1 isn't too bad these days, and of course SATA drives are dirt cheap, so you can turn around a pretty decent, inexpensive server.

I hope I can link to eBay. See below. If you want a quad Opteron system, this would work great: .....
I don't think these boards will support dual core Opterons, so the 8XX series is a great fail-safe.

I've removed your link to ebay.

pwn'd newb 😛

but its true there are cheap cpu's - seen some deals for 4 for around 100 bucks on fleabay

I ordered two different ones. Yeah I have a use, but god they are going to be loud !! Plus these are rackmount, I have a rack but it is telco style and too short to house these. Shelf maybe ??

Not too long ago I scored two Opteron 265's for $75 on ebay... that's 4 cores for those with mental problems. These could be good servers, nice find.

I would like to also know this. It would be nice to quiet it down without killing the great price I have on it. Any creative ideas on keeping a rack mount in a home setting ?

well for $100 or something its not too bad.

most of them are ddr based opteron, or xeon p4 based. its probably a good deal if you already have a rack to put them in, but given how much DDR 1 registered dimms cost, 1 U heatsinks, and older 940 opterons and such, and the noise of these things, if you just want to build a home server and dont need it to be rack mountable its probably not that great a deal.
