Well, uh, its all true. Even the iPhone 3G curiously lacks features available on every other smartphone on the market - and its a huge improvement feature-wise over the original iPhone, which was essentially a 2002 smartphone with a touch screen.

It obviously still has a huge mass-market appeal, but if its true that the Japanese value features over novelty, then yea....it makes perfect sense for the iPhone to bomb there.

Um, other than 3G and GPS, what does the 3G offer that the 2G doesn't?

Nothing, firmware updates keep both phones updated with the latest features.

The only other difference is that the Wi-Fi antenna on the original is much better, probably because the 3g antenna interfere's with the Wi-fi more.

However, the 2g does have GPS - I forgot what app I got for mine but its pretty much real time and I use it all the time. Pretty sure it was an app you need a jailbroken phone for

2g doesn't have an accessible GPS chip, the way they locate you is through triangulation from cell towers. There were jailbroken apps that used triangulation in addition to looking for registered wifi networks (meaning you had to tell the company where the wifi hotspot was) and it would aggregate all the data together to give your estimated location.

Certainly I can't understand how picture messaging is that difficult and why the hell I can't create a group and send them a text.

I for one am very glad for this. I hate group texts. They annoy the crap out of me.

Group texts are very convenient for certain things.

such as annoying people.

or to spend that 1000 unused text messages you signed up for...

Yea I realize that, the fact remains though - I have usuable nearly realtime GPS on my 2g. Works as good as others I know with 3g, at least in my area

Alright, but it's not true GPS, that's all I'm getting at here.

I have had an iPhone since day one. I love it. I'm not an Apple fan - this is my only Apple product. It is ridiculous though that it doesn't have group texting, MMS, or flash. WTF?!?!?! These have been promised since day one! The only other thing missing is true push mail, although the latest update nearly solved that issue.

I'm pretty sure google maps 2g aggregates wifi networks without any sort of jailbreak required. Apple worked with some 3rd party company on this. If you are in some urban areas, you can get a very precise location on google maps in 2g because of this. There are numerous articles about this.

I like my Tilt with the TouchFlo software :p.

Only annoying thing about WinMo is how often it reminds you about reminders that you've set. Okay WinMo, you buzzed once that I have something due today, you don't need to fucking buzz me 1 minute later and a minute after that >_<.

Oh and it'd be nice if 3G in my area started working properly again. It worked for awhile but now whenever I try and use it, I can't access anything. Edge seems to work just fine.

I own and love my iPhone, but the Wired article brought up some good points. They are years ahead of us with certain cell phone aspects, and things they care about just aren't on the iPhone. It has a shitty camera, no MMS, no tv tuner (who knew this was popular..?) and it's bulky for the features it does offer. Apple zealots think the company can do no wrong, I know and accept the shortfalls of the iPhone because it does so many other things so much better. To each their own, I guess.

Haha, even my cheapo Pearl from Sprint added MMS with the latest update.

You obviously don't have much of a social life - when its friday night and you want to ask several different people what's going on, a text message to a group is the easiest way to do it.

Apple fanbois will defend it to the end of time. No matter if the product is good or bad.

Your friends obviously don't have much of a social life - if I got a text on friday night asking what's going on, it would be far too late to make plans with them generally. I like to plan ahead. Email works just fine for this. Especially if they can check it on their phone.

In fairness, Apple haters will attack every Apple product, regardless of how good and well-suited to its intended purpose it is. In aggregate I think the iPhone is the best phone on the market, despite its acknowledged deficiencies.

 The sad thing is that they don't realize they're just as bad as the Apple fanboys.

Even if you have to jailbreak it to get functionality there are 3rd party apps to fix most, if not all of the missing features from the iPhone. hCiplboard add's the best C+P I've seen on any smart phone, I love how it stores the last 10 things I've cut for future use. My WM phone (moto Q) didn't have C+P, as only phones running Windows Mobile Professional have it. And most WM phones in the US at least, don't run the Pro version. I don't care about MMS and will never send or recieve one, but there are multiple apps that accomplish this. Email on it already is sweet, and Safari is better than possibly every other mobile browser combined.

While it's still not perfect, with the set of jailbroken apps I have installed on mine, there's no phone better. The camera still sucks, but if I wanted to take pictures I'd buy a $150 P&S digital that blows even the crappy Nokia N series phones out of the water.

I have a 3G and the only things I wish it could do that it can't out of the box are MMS (fixed with jailbreak), video capture (again fixed with jailbreak), copy and paste and wireless sync like the Zune does.

Also, every "flaw" (besides crappy camera) can and hopefully will be fixed by software updates.

I'm not a fanboi but I like the phone. I was shocked when the guy told me it didn't have pic messaging but such is life. The way I see it is everyone will always defend the products they purchase; such is life. The sooner everyone figures that out the easier everyone will sleep at night :)

I've never had a dropped call on my iPhone in the past six months.

LOL, I have to be honest, and fess up that I'm an Apple hater with an iPhone (2G, unlocked, jailbroken, on Tmobile with a TZones data plan).

Am nearly 50 years old and watched the PC/Mac shitfest from the beginning and have always cheered on PC's.

Bought a refurbished iPhone last year without a contract, and I'll be dammed if another phone does what I enjoy using the iPhone for, within reach I have a G1 (battery life sucks and no multitouch), 2 Blackberry 8900's (god save me from a gazillion keypunches to do what it takes 2-3 to do on my iPhone).

Damn Steve Jobs, damn him to hell

TBH that AT&T is the only reason keeping me from owning an iphone, that and tmobile, the other GSM operator...

But I don't think you guys have read TFA, it's not about apple haters attacking iphone, it's about the editors attacking 10% of an article in an attempt to denounce the whole thing. That and many other fanboys posting personal attacks in Wired to have it's comments shut down.

I don't really see apple haters attack the writer for praising the new iMacs and such. This to me has took a turn for the worse.
