I just got a Vostro 420, and the fans get really loud, but only when coming back from sleep or when booting up. I looked it up, some people say to leave the computer on, but obviously that doesnt work cuz it makes loud noise when coming back from sleep too.

I think it's just the fact that they spin up to full speed initially until the fan control, PWM, whatever, takes over and puts them back to whatever speed is required/set. No big thing, really.

That's normal. Beanie46's explanation makes sense. A theory of mine is that the CPU has to load everything at boot-up, and it spins up the fan because of the load.

Is the 20 seconds of noise really that bothersome?

Beanie and Eureka hit it on the head. I thought I had a similar problem as well when I got my parents a new Dell 530s (last Christmas). It does the same thing - CPU fan revs up to full blast while loading everything for a second or two.

It's nothing harmless. You should be really concerned when the fan doesn't slow down after a few minutes (if computer is left alone). Otherwise I wouldn't worry about it.

Hmm Ok, yeah I read something similar when searching, makes sense. I think Im just not used to a computer thats so fast so there's more spinning going on lol.

Thanks. There's also a beep when I start up. Not too annoying since the fan noise almost hides it, but I just want to make sure nothing's wrong, cuz no message is displayed. For example my old computer used to beep because I didnt have the fan connected to the motherboadr, just to a molex pin, and it would beep and say no processor fan.

The beep is quite normal, too. Nothing to concern yourself about....unless the computer refuses to boot and you get a sequential series of short and long beeps. Then the mb is giving you a fault code. The single beep is essentially an "I'm OK so far" signal.....like "I've got power, a cpu, memory, video card and all seem to work right now" signal.
