Fanless Fury Testing

This guy is pretty nuts, been doing lots of tests on his card and this time took off the fans!

I'm back with Experience with Fiji Series, this time I have gone where no man has even dared to step, removing fans on R9 Fury Nitro and creating 0DB card.

I have used following steps

  • Ambient temperature ranges from 20-22C

  • Fans are taken off from Nitro completely

  • -96mV/-50% power limit for all configs

  • Unigine Valley Ultra settings/8xAA in 4 hour loop

Leaving the results at the link since the table didn't copy over well

I still can't get over the size of the air cooled Fury heatsinks.... So glad I decided not to get a Fury card.

Hoping Vega isn't such a hot running card, AMD promised increased perf/watt from Polaris to Vega, so fingers crossed.

And I can't get over the size of R9 Nano heatsink. Still unbeatable by Nvidia even on much better 14nm process. The closest in size is 1050Ti now, but at half the Nano performance. Imagine what AMD will do in 14nm 🙂 Fury is very efficient when not pushed to 1GHz.

Don't know where all those binned, power efficient Fiji chips went. Apple didn't take them. AMD is not willing to discount Nano price. I smell a rebrand of those in next year to fill Polaris <-> Vega gap.

Do you not realise that Fury, and Fury nano are different cards? I didn't state 'Fiji' heatsinks, so you should have noted the distinction.

Obviously the Nano cards have smaller heatsinks as they are configured to be lower TDP and have correspondingly lower performance than the Fury cards (such as the Sapphire Fury Nitro).

Oh, and AMD already released it's 14nm GPU's, their RX480 consumes 150W and has 970/980 performance. NVIDIA's 1070 cards are also 150W, but are almost double the performance, run much cooler and quieter and are simply better cards. Oh, they cost more, as like most things in life, you get what you pay for.

Well, I don't expect Vega to not be a hot running card. Maybe Vega Nano because you get only what you pay for.
