Fancy clothes at WalMart

Walmart introduced "Metro7" last year--a step up (comment pending verification) from the typical clothing found at the retailer known for being cheap:
The strategy worked, at first. Wal-Mart couldn't get the product into stores fast enough. The retailer expanded Metro 7 into 600 stores quickly, hoping to leverage the brand's early success.
But the infusion of trendy WalMart fasion didn't take:
"We overexpanded it. We had a pretty good idea. I think what happened is we didn't follow the strategy. We overloaded the fashion part. We need to remember who we are," Scott [CEO] said.
Yes, indeed, Scott. Remember that people who are even slightly concerned about fashion, are not eager to tell their friends that the smart little dress they're wearing is from WalMart, at least, not in any location where there is at least another store that sells clothes.

Got it from someone lying dead on the side of the street?

Target does fine selling clothes, and people aren't embarrassed to admit they bought them there. Makes no difference if they're decent clothes.

Side note: the average Target customer makes $10k per year more than the average Walmart customer

Wal-mart could spin that right around:

Well, at least it's not from some dead hobo on the side of the street!

I liked this bit:
"Wal-Mart is not cool. It's impossible for Wal-Mart to be cool because they would have to discredit their entire business to do that," said veteran retail consultant Howard Davidowitz.

I haven't found any clothing at Walmart that a) fits and b) looks halfway decent. I swear, all the clothes are either for children or fat people.

Kids these days shop all based on the store. Doesn't matter if it's good or not as long as it came from the right store.

My niece (14, 15?) won't shop anywhere that isn't Von Mauer, Gap, Talbots, etc. Even though the exact same stuff and sometimes better quality and better looking can be found at stores for half the price. And then she whines that she doesn't have enough money and always needs new clothes.

Yup, pretty much.

And having worked at a convenience store across the street from a government housing project for several years, I noticed that a lot of poor people spend more money on clothes than wealthy people. Lots of expensive mid-range designer labels like Ralph Lauren, Nautica, etc. Maybe that contributes to Walmart's clothing failure.

Quite often the 'right' store has the better quality clothing. I am a Banana Republic fanboy and I notice a tremendous difference in quality, cut, and fit when compared to even their sister store Gap.

Sometimes you can get decent stuff at a lower end store, but quite often it very well may be crap and you do get a better product at a nicer store.

so you're telling me people from the "ghetto" spend more money than those kids that go on 10 grand shopping sprees? yeah ok...

I think you could find clothes that are just as good for much less if you look harder, but to each his own. :) It's not like it costs a lot of money for the manufacturer to cut the fabric differently. You can get quality clothes in many stores.

It's possible, I'm sure, but as we know time = money and I know that Banana Republic clothes fit me. So instead of trying who knows how many stores to find a pair of jeans that fit, then around to find a shirt to fit and so forth I have been more than happy with traveling to one store for my needs.

Also I am a very short and stout guy and, as strange as this may sound, Banana Republic clothes seem to be just about the closest as it comes for petite for mens. I'm 5'5" with a 31" waist, 30" inseam, and a ~43" chest - I have a tough time to find clothes that fit and also Banana Republic will also take care of basic alterations; something you can not get at locations such as Wal-Mart and Target (even though I am a huge Target fanboy for just about all of my other essentials I need in life).

Also it may not cost the manufacturers more to cut the fabric different, but to put it simply they will not. For instance Old Navy clothes are not cut the same as Gap and they are not cut the same as Banana Republic. If they did make it all the same, everybody would just shop at Old Navy. They could make it the same, but they don't. Furthermore regardless of the cut, the actual material is different. Just pick up a dress shirt from Banana Republic and compare the texture of it to Wal-Mart/Target/Kohls, etcetera. Some people don't care about the texture of their clothes, but I do. I am personally anal about little details like that.
