Fan voltage mod to quiet it down

Well, the thing is that I have this so noisy delta 80mm fan that keeps my xp1700@1680mhz at 41C full load. I wanted to quiet it down, so i made it run at 7V by moving the ground to the 5v signal. That makes a 12v - 5v= 7v. but my temps get too high, 51 at full load now, So, what I was thinkin is that I could get 8.7V by connecting the black cable to the 3.3v signal (orange wire) that goes to the motherboard. That would make my delta spin a little faster with still not too much noise, so, seems perfect to me, but I've never read anyone did that or came up with that idea before, so, is that possible?. Is there any reason why i shouldn't do that? Thanks a lot!

Build your own fan controller. I picked up the parts at Radio Shack and cost about $8. For the leads just pick up a 4-pin to 3-pin pig tail adapter. You can mount the sensor on your heatsink and adjust it as needed.

The Heatsink Guide - Noise reduction

I have built four of these and they work great provided you take the time to follow directions and get the controller adjusted. As sensor heats up, the fan runs faster to cool it back down. When temps fall, the fan slows back down.
