I thought that all modern video cards would provide fan speed control. How would one find out if it does or not ? Can't find any info at manufacturer's site.

Thanks.

btw : I wanted to get this Gigabyte 9600GT card for $ 60 w free shipping. Then read the NE "reviews" and found that it does not provide fan speed control - even tho it has a Zalman fan. Surprised.

No, XFX made a bunch of 8800GS cards with fixed fanspeed (two wire fan power).

You can't really tell easily, best bet before buying is to read reviews.

I wouldn't be surprised if that 9600GT's fan couldn't be controlled, since it's got a 2 wire connector. That's nothing but a power plug; you'd probably need a third wire to provide control. My Palit 4850 is like this too; the fan runs at max no matter what (keeps the temps really low, but the noise can get annoying).

I put a Zalman fan on my old 7900GS, they have two plugs for 5 and 12 volt. They are always at full voltage though. But, even so the Zalman fans are very quiet, mine was not able to be heard at all even with the 12 volt plug. If it were a small fan I'd be more concerned, but my guess is that the fan on that card will be nearly slient.

Manufacturers should specify if a graphics card supports fan speed control ( or not ).

Wish the mod could arrange for someone to do a article on graphics card fan speed control.

Well, I know my 2 Asus GeForce 8800GTs have no software fan control so I guess my GPU fans are running at 100%, also?:)

My XFX 8800GT Alpha Dog edition card came with a 2-wire fan (no control). I e-mailed XFX and they sent me a replacement cooler with adjustable fan free of charge.
