Fan spacers net 4c improvement in cpu temp

This isn't a new mod, it's been done before using the FOP 38 coolers. Simply raise the fan with spacers about 1/4 above the heatsink and you would get an improvement of about 2-3c. I am currently running 2.01v at 1458MHz, using a Golden Gate and a freakin' Delta. Temps are fine, about 46c after Prime95 runs for an hour. I hate the Delta and am always trying to lose it, but with a Thermaltake 31cfm my temps are hitting 51c, too toasty for my tastes, although I am 100% stable. Desperate, I took off my heatsink and fan, washed it out real good with hot water, touched up the lapping with some 1000-grit, reapplied artic silver II, and used longer bolts to add 1/4 inch spacers (two nuts). I will give most of the credit to the spacers, I was able to lower my temps to 47c under full load with the Thermaltake 31cfm! Bye, bye forever Delta.

How much gain is from difference in ambient case temp?

How much gain from lapping?

How much gain from the fan spacers?

How much gain from removing hte dust in the heatsink and fan?

Your title is a bit misleading, since your 4C drop was likely a combination of all of the above. In face, i'd have to guess that mose of the gain is from cleaning the dust out of your heatsink, since i've noticed on several systems, that the temp can rise 3-4C between a dirty heatsink and a clean, dust free heatsink. In face, if I dust my own taisol cgk760 w 80mm fan, i can drop the temps 2-3C easily.

I clean out my heatsink once a week with compressed air. I reapply artic silver approximately every two months. My lapping was still mirror smooth, just did all this while I had it apart. So, like I said, most of the credit will go to the spacers. My case temps stay at a constant 25-26c under full cpu and gpu load, both before and after. While the fan spacers improved my temps approx. 4c, I am sure it will have varying results on different systems. I don't see anything misleading about the title though. I didn't say fan spacers will give everybody an automatic 4c guaranteed. I would also think anybody pulling off the heatsink and fan would clean it real good and reapply artic silver while they are at it, so they would get the same extra benefit from those factors to add to the spacer improvement.

So lighten up!
