Homers suck.

Using "We" in sports is code for "I gain self esteem when the sports team I root for wins".

A homer is not just someone who roots for the hometown team - that's normal. A homer is someone who can't see past their loyalty to their team (even if it's not the hometown team). Someone who thinks every call against their team is bogus, and every play should result in a penalty against the other team. Someone who thinks their team is the best in the league when they clearly are not. Those people suck. People who root for the hometown team do not suck, that's normal.

You have a great point about the blindly biased fans. I still think rooting and supporting "local sports team" just because they are the closest to you is generally bogus. A fan needs to have a better reason than proximity to root for a team like 'my cousin is in their AAA farm club' or 'that Tom Brady sure is a swell guy'. Exceptions go to community-owned teams (GB Packers).

The millionaire/billionaire owner of the team loses no sleep threatening to move the team (or actually doing it) if they can't get enough corporate welfare dollars squeezed out of the local populace. "Use tax dollars to build my team a stadium, give me the vending rights, give me the luxury boxes, and I might keep your beloved Colts, Raiders, Nordiques, Cardinals in town" says the greedy sports owner.

I grew up in the Syracuse area, but never attended the school as I had moved to Ohio by the time I was old enough to go to college, plus SU is expensive. BUT, I am a diehard Syracuse Orange fan, have been since I was a kid and always will be. I hope one day my kids will go there. Your rule would apply to 90% of college fans, especially Notre Dame fans. Most fans never went to the school, but associate with it in other ways.

And as for Pro teams, if the players (free agency) and owners (midnight moves) don't have loyalty to their town, why should we be held to a higher standard. I have been a Broncos fan since the Dallas/Denver Superbowl in the 70s. I have only visited the city twice and been to one game in 30 years. I will never root for another team, including the Texans (I live in Houston). I used to own Texans season tickets. When the Broncos came during a pre-season game, I wore my Broncos apparel. The fans around me didn't care for it, but they could suck it for all I care.
