fan reliability

Has anyone noticed a difference between the reliability between a standard name brand fan and a name brand "colored" LED fan? I myself haven't, but I was wondering if anyone else has had fans actually die on them, or had fans more susceptible to dust, etc. I would do a poll, but I don't know how to do those.

I understand. I refuse to get cheap fans, because I trust name brand equipment to be more reliable, and cooling just isn't one of the things you mess around with. But I'm about to spend $188 on 11 fans for my system, and I was wondering if anyone has had any bad experiences with LED fans, as opposed to standard case fans. And the reason why I want the LED fans, is that they have the specs I'm looking for.

wtf! just go for liquid cooling and you could still afford a handful of yate loons

I would love too, especially with the room that I have on the right side of the case. I could fit a body in there. But I'm a bit weary about having liquid inside a server case. Granted it may not be worth as much now, but I did spend $600 on that mobo, and $250 for each processor. You know? But I will research water cooling for Xeons tonight.

Most people get brand name fans for their CFM/DB ratings.

Those two things are important yes, but bearing type can save you lots of problems as time goes on. The 8-fans in my case:

1x120x38 Panaflo wave-bearing UH
1x120x25 Vantec Thermoflow dual-bearing
2x80x25 Panaflo WB H1A
2x80x25 Vantec TF DB
2x80x25 Antec LED DB

The Antec's are the oldest, about 2 1/2 years, and they have the same metrics as when I bought them. IMO, buying high-quality fans is the gift that just keeps on giving. 😉

In general, dual ball bearing fans from a good brand will last longest. And just as an aside, the top name brand fan mfrs (Pana, Sanyo, Nidec, NMB, Delta) don't make LED fans... Think on that.

I usually sort my fan order like this: Size, ball bearings, performance, noise, and from there I will try to get the LED color I want, if color is important. Sometimes it is and sometimes it isn't. I swap parts pretty often so I can't say which brand lasts the longest, but I can tell you that I've had several sleeve fans fail and have never replaced a BB fan. I would never use a sleeve unless that's all I had and I needed a fan right then. I use Sunon, Antec, Panaflow and NMB.
