I am running an XP1600+ on an ECS K7S5A. My current HSF is the Coolermaster DP5-6I31C. It is very loud so I bought a 60-80 fan adapter and this fan this fan The specs on the new fan are better, higher CFM lower noise. When I installed the new fan it seems to not cool well at all. System locked up in the middle of 3dMark2001 and when I rebooted a few minutes later BIOS showed temp at 55C. I tried the fan both blowing on the heat sink and blowing away from the heat sink with the same results. With the old fan the max temp I see is 51C after encoding MP3's for about an hour. Any ideas why this would be?

just because a fan pushes more air doseny mean it will cool better. the 80 mm fan you have probilly isnt pushingthe airto th eright part of thr CPU/sink that would be my guess cause ive seen ithappen before

I concur. The problem is this: the fan only pushes 29.5cfm (which is weak for an 80 mm anyway), and this is compounded by the 80mm to 60mm adapter. When the fan is trying to push the air through the smaller hole of the adapter, it doesn't have enough push to get an effective airflow, the air can't get to heatsink to cool it - probably getting a lot of back flow.
IMHO: you'd be better off ditching the adapter and 80 mm fan, and getting something like a Papst 60 mm which pushes something like 33 cfm at only 30 decibels. Better airflow for basically the same decibel rating, according to the note on the bottom of the page about your current fan.(that fan is a joke, really, it's weak and loud - not good for a cpu)
OR get a much higher cfm 80mm, but then it would be probably more noise. Those 80 to 60 mm adapters are kinda bunk, really.
Hope that helps.

Thanks for the help. I reinstalled the 60mm fan to the hs and relocated the 80mm to a front intake. I will look for another set-up. I may just buy a new HSF. Is the GC68 difficult to install? This looks like a great cooler for the price.
