Hi all,
Probably a boneheaded question but my fan is making some noise. Should I just plan on replacing it or does this happen periodically and can be fixed?
Thx for any advice.

All fans have a hum factor, thats normal. Or is it making sounds like WW2 or somthing? Could be seated badly and its rattling.

try out this method. Its worked really well for me. I do it to all my fans. You can get a tube of lubricant in a pen type applicator at radioshack for a few bucks.

it's hard to say without hearing it...as HelloDeli said, all fans make a certain amount and type of noise and it varies from fan to fan. exactly which fan is it (i.e. case, cpu, chipset)? i know some chipset fans have a reputation for making noise and/or failing.

edit: the link that flood5 posted is very good as well. i have done this and i suggest you give it a shot as well...

Just replace it. Go hang out on the Case and Cooling forum for a couple of weeks and you'll be a pro in no time. Gizzo is the resident master over there, so pay attention to his posts on fans. He also has a page with specs, so you can compare fans on how much output they have and how quiet they are in db.

I would say that your fan is probably wearing out if it's starting to make noise. Just replace it. Most fans are about $10 on average unless you go with a Papst, which is almost impossible to find in the US and very expensive. I personally like the Panaflo's btw.

It's the case fan and it normally sort of hums but now it has kinda a rattling sound. I will make sure it is seated properly maybe lubing it as suggested...and replace it if necessary.
Thx again.
