anyways I need to buy a new one. Whats a good 80mm fan with 3pin connector? fairly quiet, but with decent airflow since it blows directly on to the heatsink, some kind of RPM control might not be bad either.
panaflo/zalman/stealth vantecs.... zalman fanmate 1 is a cheap cheap little speed controller. don't go for thermal control. its bunk. the temperature ranges at which the fans trip are not set by u..and thus rather useless. basically the sensor will never reach the temperature for speed change and ur fan will spin medium rate all the time😛 pretty lame.
Might be a good idea to find out the CFM rating on that fan (currently installed) so that you at least meet, or exceed, it's performance. Chances are, you'll be able to find a fan by the above mentioned makers that can do the job at less db. This fan looks to have good spec's as far as CFM and db levels, and has a controller on it to allow you to control the speed of the fan. Look at frozencpu's fan selection to at least get an idea of what's available and some prices. You shouldn't spend over $15 for an 80mm fan, no matter who makes it.
The Enermax I linked to above has almost twice the CFM at only a [max] of 6db more... Yeah, there's a $9 difference in price, but to get more CFM and less db is worth the difference to me (probably half the db of the fan inside the hp that the person has now). If the current fan can be heard down a hallway and through a closed door, it has to be LOUD... Train horn level loud.
I realized a had an enermax 3 pin fan like that in my other computer and used that. Put it in, turned it on, and it actually blew a cloud of dust out of the heatsink, speedfan says 39C with load 🙂
