Fan blowing on back of MB behind cpu socket drops temps by 4C

I cut a hole in the MB tray, behind the cpu socket, then cut a hole above that in my case side panel and put an 80mm panaflo L1A there. So the fan blows on the back of the MB behind the socket. Reading temps in bios after running prime95 for an hour, its now at 44C, down from 49C.
I'm pretty sure that checking temps in bios is the only way to read off the diode with an nf7. If the reading were off the socket, then these results would be worthless because then maybe I am just cooling the pcb and not the cpu at all.
 
It would nice to know for sure.

OTOH, regardless of the reading, it should drop the temp some.
 
Actually, no, there is no realistic temp change.

.5C with a hole in MB socket region, and a directed airflow at the hole. I'd surmise less (probably 0 or maybe a tad more than zero) with the motherboard pcb sitting there.

Welcome to socket-thermistor reading hell. ANy little thing can alter the reading, while not effecting actual cpu temps. Yet people still claim they are accurate..... :/

PS. I guess you may be seeing a .5C temp drop (even though this is a Ceramic PCB cpu)

There was a long thread at Hard forums about this. Many claimed 5C and more drops in temps off the cpu diode and many claimed bs. I decided to try it out for myself because I'm using 1.9 vcore and although I have compelte stability, extra cooling can only help. I will do some research now and find out for sure whether my bios reading is off the diode or socket.
 
yeah, AFAIK the NF7-s reads the socket-thermsitor, and doesn't give you the ability to read the diode. So your temp drop is a false-temp drop, all too common with socket-thermistors.

And the HardForums have way too many people who swear by socket-thermsitor accuracy :/

I can see 1-2 degrees because it would cool down the motherboard, thus cooling down the socket, thus cooling down the operating temp of the core a tiny bit due to the increase temperature differential.

You might get some cooling, but not much. I had the motherboard tray on one of my computers cut away behind the cpu... only to get to the bolts of the rather large heatsink I had on it. I got tired of removing the motherboard every time I wanted to replace the CPU. If it makes you happy, cut away.
 
I tried this myself after reading that big hardocp thread but my temps didn't drop any. Any watercoolers have any luck with this?
