How many of you here are generous to your family when upgrading your computer?

I just gave a year old P4 3ghz/6800GT/2gb ram, 240gb hdd, sb audigy 2 platinum, dvdrw and cdrw to my brother.

Then my other brother I gave a three year old P4, 2.2ghz, 1gb ram, ati 8500, dvdrw, cdrw and 30 gb hd with sb audigy ls.

Of course I upgraded to the system in my sig. I guess I just don't prefer to go the resale route as I prefer my family members to have good things.

My family isnt computer literate.

Parents are happy with their P2 400 that they turn on once a month.

Sis is happy with her Celeron 500 that will play all the barney games my neice can throw at it.

Other Sis has a husband who uses his computer only to access the MLS server, and is more than happy with his HP 1.1 Celeron

The more I crap I gave them would be more time running around troubleshooting what they muss up. Status Quo for me.

when I upgrade I only upgrade what needs to be upgraded . .

so it'll be the same computer but in 2.5 years almost everything will have been swapped at least once.

Heh, title of post sounds like a Benevolent Tim Allen Helper show or something.

Like..."Home Improvement" for welfare recipients.

I usually give my parents my hand me downs, if I don't sell them.

At the moment they have an Athlon XP 1700+ with 512MB of ram, which works fine for them.

I do complete system upgrade every 5 years and I give the old system away to family. I'm nice like that.

I wouldn't call going from a 3gh P4 to an a64 an "upgrade "

(I kid, I kid 😛)

I do the same thing - my Mom got my old 19" CRT since she had the smallest monitor in the family. That's actually how each of us ended up with PCs, my Dad outgrew one and gave it to me. I then built my own and passed the old one onto my Mom. Built another one, gave Mom the first one I built, and she gave my sister her old PC. Everyone's currently happy with their PCs, so my last board/chip/ram/case are just sitting in a closet at home.

Sweet! Now they can do their word processing and send fowarded emails with immense power. They'll get 234324123 FPS on solitaire!
