Family keeps asking me what I want for Christmas...

I don't know what to ask for. I need some suggestions.

I like gadgets and technology, plus I love looking good. What should I ask for?

Gifts should be under $50.

Gift cards are a little more personalized then just cash. You can tell them where you'd like the cards from and then we there is something you want, you can go get it.

Oh come on ATOT, he hasn't forgotten to include H's in months. It's getting old.

How about winter clothing? I wouldn't mind a decent scarf or something.

Gift cards are the worst gifts in the history of gifts.

They require spending more than intended or leave unused funds on the card and can only be used at one store.
Cash has zero drawbacks.

But it makes the people buying them feel good about themselves.

I'd say gift cards but I hate them, so cash.

Biggest scam ever I think.

It's just some stupid emotional reaction with gift cards that make people feel like they're giving a actual gift and for some reason feel that it's not tacky but money is. But all it does is lock you into using the funds on the gift card at that specific place you got it and then having to either leave money left on it or go over the total amount to use up every cent. Don't forget to use it before a year also!

I usually just say wine/booze. I really don't like people getting me gifts because if I want something for myself, I usually just get it. Then when people buy me presents it is usually stuff I don't need/want.

At least if people get me things like gift cards, food, wine/booze, etc..., I know I will use it.

The only person I don't mind getting me actual gifts is my wife, but that's mostly because I come up with a few things I want, but don't get for myself, and then hint to her that I want them.

If it were up to me, gift giving would be restricted to the immediate family (spouse, kids).

You can probably almost have enough for a hooker and a little blow. Would not be the best quality... but it is the though that counts.

I most want to be taken out to a nice meal. That is what gift giving should be about: spending time with the other person.

As for technology gifts, many things can be had in that price range (on sale) that are useful to just about anyone. 8GB-32GB USB flash drives always come in handy. A small UPS battery backup. A 250GB-1TB external USB drive for off-site backup (take it to work or to a family member in case your house burns down or a theif takes your equipment). The latter two items most people SHOULD have and few people actually do have. You can probably get a memory upgrade for your computer in that price range, just give them an exact part number to avoid confusion.

But they're also less practical.
A gift card is limited to a single store, and it can expire.
Cash is like a gift card that can be used anywhere. Want to personalize it? Send it inside a nice card or something like that.

A nice emotional placebo.:awe:
It's great - you take perfectly good money, and remove a substantial amount of its utility (spendable anywhere to spendable at a limited number of locations). Then you slap a fancy design on the card, which the recipient must now remember to carry along and use at the limited number of locations, and somehow that makes it worth it.

Mmmm, delicious marketing ploys. 😀

This. Gift cards are complete scams. It's like instant 10% profit for the store since most people don't use all of it.

I'd rather put cash into a really nice card from a Hallmark store, and write a personalized note inside. That shows a lot more thought and effort than ruining perfectly good cash by turning it into a Best Buy card or whatever.

same problem for me

i finally came up with:

xBox Live 1 year card (i need to get one anyway when my sub runs out in january)
rock band (original) for xbox 360 , walmart has it for $20, we only have rock band 2
cowboy boots
take me out to dinner (i eat, pretty much everyday, anyway)
