I didn't say that the parents are not going to do anything. THey just haven't filed a missing person report and plan to track her down on their own by talking to the kid's friends. They're also eliciting friends' and relatives' advice.

Look, this is a 14-year-old girl who has run away 3 times, and everybody knows about it. The courts are not wonderful places, but these parents do not appear to be able to control her, according to the little bit of information you've given us.

I care about world hunger, but it doesn't mean the effort I give isn't stupid. I didn't say stupid, but I said the state fvcks up most cases of Foster Care, and that's simply a fact in my own mind. Just about every state has a massive DHR scandal in which they find the people DID NOT care. So what I am a supposed to do? Just believe that you are one of the good ones? I can actually believe that, but don't act as if the system works. It doesn't. I'd like to know how the state is going to help this girl more than her parents. Force her to live in a Foster Home? Send her to military school? That's going to have very little effect on someone who's problem is evidently being selfish.

But, I'd like some logic as to how the state would be any better. They have a secret mind-ray device they use? If anything she will be exposed to even worse behavior. As I said: she's hardly an egregious violator of rules and morality. She's need to be back in her parent's home. My logic is sound. Is yours?

What you are supposed to do is be a good friend, which it sounds like you are doing (thanks). There are a lot more support systems out there than just the DYFS - I'm in NJ. There are church and private counseling services. A good place to call for advice is a battered women's hotline - though you aren't female and battered, they are really good at disfunctional family stuff and they are great at keeping things private.

State isn't great, but it beats the heck out of sending the kid away to "rehab" or secure "adventure" camp or any of those stupid programs that are supposed to "help" troubled children.

When I was a teen-ager, a friend of mine did something similar, due to "draconian" restrictions placed on her by her parents after previous incidents. Seeing both sides of it at the time, I think she just used the incident as an excuse. She had run away to Washington State previously due to their then lax laws in dealing with runaways, and now had friends down there. Her parents knew she didn't have the money to get there though. I warned them that if they had any sort of monetary stash in the house, to make sure they moved it, changed the lock or combination it was under, etc.

Sure enough, a few days later, they came home to a broken window and an empty safe. I always found out where my parents hid stuff as a kid, what the lock combinations were, etc., and warned her parents that she probably knew such information about anything like that at their house. They had been sure she didn't, though.

Once she came over to my house and actually installed IM on my computer's newly formatted drive while I was away (really pissed me off btw. damn girl couldn't even wait to get home to use IM on her own computer). AOL doesn't by default - but AOL has an entire group of CS reps that specialize in cooperating with the police and such. If you have her screen name - and she used it recently - they should be able to tell where she called from.
