Family Finds $10G in Box of Crackers
Saturday, December 27, 2008

IRVINE, California ? The box of crackers Debra Rogoff bought from the grocery store had some crackerjack in it ? an envelope stuffed with $10,000.

Yet the Irvine woman was more curious than ecstatic about her daughter's find. After all, who would leave money in such a place?

"We just thought, 'This is someone's money,"' she said. "We would never feel good about spending it."

Rather than go on a shopping spree, the family called police and was initially told the money could be part of a drug drop.

Police later heard from store managers at Whole Foods in Tustin that an elderly woman had come in a few days earlier, hysterical because she had mistakenly returned a box of crackers with her life savings inside. In a mix-up the store restocked the box rather than composting it.

The Lake Forest woman, whose identity was not released, had lost faith in her bank and decided the box would be a safer place for the money.

Luckily for her, the box of Annie's Sour Cream and Onion Cheddar Bunny crackers were bought by the Rogoffs, who discovered the crisp $100 bills in an unmarked white envelope on Oct. 10.

The Rogoffs never heard from the woman and didn't receive a reward, but Rogoff did return to Whole Foods a couple weeks later.

"I asked them if I could have another box of crackers," she said with a laugh. The store obliged.

At least some people in this country still have some ethics.

Not me though, I would've invested the money myself.

what the hell...these stories keep turning up with old people and wads of cash. i thought only my hippie brother hated banks, and even *that* bastard got a checking account a few months ago.

If I would have heard about the lady missing her money I would have turned it in. However, since I would have kept my mouth shut, that money would have been invested pretty fast. Who the hell returns food to the supermarket? On top of that, who returns open boxes of food? Lastly, who hides money in food boxes?

Yeah, if opened boxes of food are returnable.. and they obviously didn't check the box before putting it back on the shelf.. anything could have been done to those crackers. I'll just put a couple drops of lsd on these crackers and return them to the store.

Accepting food returns has to be against some kind of law.

Most supermarkets would take returns but it usually just goes to the garbage bin. They do it for the sake of their customers.

I would have taken the money. If the woman is stupid enough to put the money in a cracker box and return it to the store then I don't think she should have it anyway. She's obviously bad at handling money. Me on the other hand, well... I would put that towards my college education. 🙂

I have no morals. That money would've been converted into several $500-$700 money orders and mailed to my bank over the course of 3 months or so.

That actually made me laugh. Something doen't seem right...

Someday you WILL lose something very valuable to you and wish it to be returned to you.

We all do. What separates us is those who have the logic and foresight to understand this simple concept, and those who are too shortsighted to not understand it.

I am doubtful of this. Explain what will be taken from me then.

LOL, you are very young, aren't you? :laughing;

EVERYONE loses something they desperately need at least once in their life. From a wallet while on vacation to a cell phone to a ticket right before an event. You WILL lose something valuable to you and wish it to be returned at LEAST once in your life. I guarantee it.

😛 Maybe I will be more cautious than others in life.

List of fail:
Returning crackers to the grocery store
Store restocking returned, opened food ( 😕 )
Storing life savings in a cracker box instead of in an FDIC insured bank account
Old lady's life savings is $10,000.

YES YES YES YES!

WHY!?!?!?!?!

God damn, this lady is a dumb frikker! You get up to $100,000 insured by the FDIC or whatever! SO WHY NOT IN A BANK?! COME ON!

add to the list that the family bought the box of crackers without noticing the box was already opened =/ the only possibility that i can think of is the parents thought their daughter opened it up inside the store and bought it
