Yet here I am, mod free with the gun working as intended.

It was only borked with mods.

Call it bad luck if you want, but I'm not putting the mods back on. There's not even an unofficial patch to rectify it, if it is indeed an issue with the base game.

Mods for NV just aren't up to snuff, in my opinion.

Most likely a game quirk.

Also don't just throw in mods willie-nillie, read the description and more importantly read the comments. If you're crashing at start-up it's most likely a missing master file.

I had just the opposite experience - with the vanilla game I could not play more than a minute or two without CTD. I had to mod to make the game even playable. I eventually broke it - had over a hundred mods loaded, with over eighty consecutively loaded - but the experience was soooo much nicer than the vanilla game. Personally even for a first play through I'd recommend the UI mods, Nevada Skies, NMC's texture pack, the manual 4GB mod, Project Reality, Weapon Mods Expanded/Calibex, the Stutter Remover, and Mission Mojave. They just make the game so very much more stable, so very much more pretty, and so very much more challenging and fun.

When I get past my current crunch at work I'm going to reinstall New Vegas, mod it with Mod Organizer, and play through again.

Without mods I got over 40 hours into my first game of New Vegas with no crashing.

But the unofficial patches are sure nice.

Crashing wasn't my issue.

With the unofficial patches, it's quite the opposite.
I didn't find that with Oblivion. With Oblivion several bugs that were claimed to have fixed weren't, and other bugs were made worse by the unofficial patches. I also had a lot more CTDs during the game and when exiting.

Not to take anything away from the tremendous amount of work the community puts into these things, but they don't work for me.

I know that feeling, mod overload LOL. Generally my first run through usually ends up adding a mod here, a mod there, fix this, add more npcs...etc

I spiced it up last time with some of the radio mods. Maybe conelrad or/and Raze. Not quite sure, but I kept on tuning on throughout the game. Added a few tunes myself.

Also you might consider slowing down level progression. Did that with the original and expect here to.

Not sure about this one but apparently i burned it allright.

Just a few ideas and have fun. :)

My thing was adding content. Bounties, quest mods, new lands, AWOP, Interiors, Project Brazil, Deimos . . . Each time you add and remove something, there's a chance that something goes wrong with Nexus Mod manager's uninstall, amazing as it is.

Haven't tried one for New Vegas, but Raptre's GNR Enhanced for FO3 is awesome. I hated most of the FONW songs and didn't like Mr. Vegas the way I like Three Dog, so I just keep the radio off in NV. When I reload NV, I'm going to load a similar mod though.

I was actually using a different one myself most of the time, but cannot rightfully remember which. Might check that one cheers mate. :)

THE FOLLOWING MIGHT CONTAIN SPOILERS:
Btw if you do not engage yourself in direct combat with the bandit dudes in the first town, you will be able to interact with them for the remainder. Might be a consideration. As far as I remember you just dont have to kill any yourself, but you will still gain the respect of the town.

The experience though might come out a bit buggy in the end especially if you use that last mod I linked to. You must definately try that mod out outstanding. :D

Enjoy. :)

I tried running some mods from nexus, the ones that people said were a must, and instability problems with intermediate CTD's and hangs. Not much of a payoff graphically. I would stick to the gun mods, new missions, and just about anything they did not involve graphically enhancing the game. The game's is terribly outdated, and it's a shame they cannot invest a new engine into it.

AWOP is actually the mod that broke my last install. I don't blame AWOP - I had loaded well over a hundred and was then concurrently running eighty-odd IIRC. Definitely a great mod though, and I full intend to make it part of my next build, just with more care.

I found NMC's texture mods, Project Beauty, and various other mods to make it very attractive. But as always, pretty is subjective. With probably five hundred + hours in New Vegas, obviously I'm a "glass is half full of awesome" kinda guy.

This time I'm loading it on my new 500 GB Samsung Evo SSD so I can run the big NMC pack. Wish I could find a matching 8GB set of RAM though.
