I've got a hankering for a new PC game. Fallout 3 seems pretty popular, but I saw someone playing it on the 360 and found it entirely unimpressive. Specifically, it looked clunky, clumsy, and a bit boring.

I know, I know: mouse+keyboard > snatch, but is the gameplay itself really that much better on the PC? I'd love to hear from people who've experienced both.
 
I loved the 360 version....so it sounds like, to me, your opinion is wrong!!

Don't knock it til you try it. I used to be all gung ho for having these FPS games on the PC, but it's something that takes getting used to with a 360 controller...kind of fun. I still play the more hardcore FPS games on my PC though.

Read some reviews of the game on the PC, see if you like it then...warcow(I think that's who he is) had a nice review up...wasn't sure if it was PC or console though...pretty unbiased.
 
I loved Fallout 3, but I was already a fan boy from I & II. I enjoyed just roaming around the wasteland coming across different people, then deciding whether to kill them, or help them, then kill them. 🙂
 
Watching other people play games is often more boring than playing them yourself. Just ask girlfriends of guys who game.
 
A big appeal of F3 is the exploration, story, and decisions you make along the way. Just watching someone walk through a mostly deserted landscape is not a good way to get a feel for the game.
 
Fallout 3 was _amazing_ on the 360. Your friend must have been doing it wrong or something. Or maybe it's just not an entertaining game to watch. *shrugs*
 
Well it basically is the Oblivion engine, and Bethesda's style imposed on a series that used to have the Black Isle/Bioware-style touch. I loved Oblivion for the first 20 or so hours but it got repetitive. Felt the same about FO3.
 
The biggest reason to own it on PC would be the ability to mod the game. If you don't like a certain element about the gameplay, chances are some else didn't either and there is a mod out there to "fix" it.

Let us know what you think. I played it for 30 hours or so and really enjoyed it.

Well the patch allowed PC users to remap functions finally, specifically Tab/Pip Boy. In terms of actual controls and gameplay, I'd say it really depends whether you rely on VATS or actually play it like an FPS. If you rely on VATS and just want to play in a laid back fashion, the consoles and the controller are fine. If you want to aim and play it like an FPS, the mouse and KB are obviously superior.

Beyond that, the PC is superior in just about every way possible, as are most PC versions. Higher resolutions, much better graphics and settings and options. Better load times (horrible on the 360 compared to PC) and smoother gameplay with higher frame rates, more RAM and more VRAM.

Besides that you can run mods on the PC that allow you to change things you don't like. Personally I like the mod feature the most to improve on PC strengths even further with high-res texture mods which go a long way to correct one of my biggest gripes from the original title, the overly roundedness and lack of contrast of everything in the game.

I always think it's fun watching enemies explode on the kill shot.

Its like a future/apocalyptic version of Oblivion. And Oblivion was a dumbed-down, pretty version of Morrowind made specifically for the console crowd because thats the only thing they would play.

Fallout 3 without mods is exactly the same on consoles and computer. Like Oblivion its real potential lay in mods, which only the PC crowd will be able to enjoy.

Without the Quick-Travel feature both games would have been incredibly boring.
 
I guess I'm one of the few that didn't like the game. The sidequests gave me no sense of connection to anything and the voice acting was horrbile. It's like they translated stuff from another language. Graphics were ok but nothing special. I was expecting a lot more from the rave reviews it got.

The PC version is so far ahead of the Xbox version that it's really not even the same game. I have mine modded in such a way that about 5x as many monsters spawn, my companions never die - they are repeatedly knocked "unconscious" then wake up about 5 seconds later, my game has no carry limit, one of the mods added a musket to replace the .44 pistol, my guns can have extended clips, laser sights, scopes, and auto-fire modifications, almost any gun or armor can be repaired with Scrap Metal or Iron, the vendors have unlimited money so I can sell all of my inventory instead of stockpiling it, my weapons degrade at normal rate when using VATS as opposed to the usual 4x rate, the "mysterious stranger" looks like Chuck Norris, companions no longer have a karma check and I can have as many as I want, my companions are balanced out by no longer having unlimited ammo and I'm required to supply their armor as well, hacking terminals is no longer a pain in the ass since there's only 1 word to choose from.

You can pretty much make the game however you want.
