Fallout 3 versus Fallout New Vegas, which should i play?

The best part about FO3 vs NV is in FO3 you're introduced to the world after nuclear war like a child being thrown out into the woods alone. In NV you have a little more direction as to what you're looking for or the point of you being where you are. FO3 had more unknowns that way.

If you're really only going to play one, play New Vegas. If you're going to play both, play 3 first.

As an oldschool Fallout fan very much in love with Fallout 2, I'd say that New Vegas captured the essence of the Fallout Universe a little better, both are damn good games though and if you decide to play both then play then play Fallout 3 first.

I have the disc version of Fallout 3 and if I dont install GFWL I never have a problem. That also means I cant play about a quarter of my Steam titles.

There's a mod that disables GFWL in 3.

Also if you've got the RAM, there's mods that let you install FO3 into NV. You can jump between the east and west coast.

Not at all, just like the mod that lets you jump between Morrowind and Oblivion. But whatever.

Speaking as someone who has probly sunk nigh on 200 hrs on each I highly recommend playing them in order. But recommend FO3 over NV (gasp). I found FO3 to be very compelling with a just jaw dropping awesome environment, true open worlds and a great storyline. The enemies and NPCs are memorable with plenty of personality. Very sand box like as they plunk you down and it's a go anywhere try anything treat.

NV is also great, it adds a little more with some more realistic play (survival mode -- must eat/drink/sleep to survive, no instant healing, crippled limbs) but I found the story lacking and it was more linear. It also takes quite a while to get to the Strip and I found it incredibly small and underwhelming once there. One of the only great pluses to NV is the aim-down-sights that FO3 was lacking (still has some scoped weaps tho -- don't give up all hope). The world in NV is less open with high mountain bs walls, and overall there is less to explore and checkout. And while the radio is repetitive on either version I still found FO3 to have more variety and entertainment than NV.

Old World Blues add on is a MUST for NV if you like sci-fi at all. Didn't get around to trying out much of the addons for FO3, but idid manage to get a platinum for the main story for PS3.

I have never raced through Baldurs Gate 2, the vast majority of the fun is wandering aimlessly and getting into trouble with things that are absolutely none of your business.

Oh, and some pretty damn essential items are only available in the side quests, like the Ore needed to upgrade your Mace of Disruption so it protects you from level drain. Actually, all the good equipment is off the main path.

Exactly.

But a few years ago I encountered a sub-culture of players who try to get through the entire thing in under an hour. They use tricks and exploits to get through. I was the same as you in that, what's the point of it. But apparently some people like the oddest things.

My sentiments exactly. But to each their own. I guess these people are getting something completely different out of the game than I am.

The point is to understand game mechanics to the point where you can do such things. It's about understanding the game to its most base level, stretching the limits of the design of the game.

Its not necessarily about beating the game, its about showing that you understand the game better than other people.

Personal opinion, but there is a difference between 'Knowing the mechanics' and 'Exploiting weaknesses'. Plus, you lose the flavor of the game.

The both use the exact same engine so there really isnt any reason one would work perfectly and the other not at all.

Its actually something of a known issue that FO3 is kind of quirky. I tried all of the little tricks and nothing would work, I finally gave up on it.

Seriously, I get what you meant. You get to a point where you become pretty invincible. But definitely play FO3 to the end. that last little stretch will cure you of the invincibility feeling I think.

And yeah, would be nice to have FO4 at some point. Although I still think that Bethesda could milk FO3 engine a bit more (personal opinion).

It really is a great game. I personally liked it more than Fallout 3. Thought the world was more interesting, the characters were more interesting, communities knew about events that happened in other communities, i liked how there was actual color (though i guess the east coast is more bland and the nuclear bombings were worse there), thought the factions were fun, enemies and environments better, weapons were more fun, etc. Fallout 3 was just...depressing. Not bad by any means, just depressing.

Also you can play the quests from both games (i believe main quests included???) I don't have enough memory to handle it, although it looks better than the morroblivion one (the detail level between morrowind and oblivion are rather large and kinda disturbing)

I never had much problems with it, at least without lots of mods.

I don't know how long ago you tried it, but I'm guessing later patches and drivers have fixed most of the issues.

However, I think F03 was more "Doom and Gloom", you emerge from the vault having never set foot in the world before and everything is ruined, there's people out there dying or starving and there's raider and other factions killing or eating people. I was actually blown away by the world and what was going on in it, I suppose it played with my imagination a little because I really got into my character.

New Vegas on the other hand, everything is not as depressing, the world is starting to develop a little more and people seem to be doing pretty well. I think I like New Vegas more because of all the crazy things you get to do and see, I also liked how I was able to see a destroyed Washington D.C.

I almost feel like playing both again.
