Another option would be to uninstall the game, and then reinstall without patching it... just try your retail version.
Might behave differently.
I recall having almost no issues with it on my AMD X2 and 4850. (didn't patch it).

Uh, Steam version. Automatically downloads the most current version.

Since Fallout: New Vegas is a standalone game, maybe he will.

Haven't read his news section lately have ya guys? 😉. He's starting them up again, due to a partnership where another company will host and format them and create all the HTML etc etc. First one is supposed to be out in Sept I think.

no I haven't even been to that site in about year. anyway that's certainly good news.

I do have one annoying problem with sound. Music on on the PIP-Boy radio skips if I run the game using my X-FI for audio. Must be an issue with Creative's drivers me thinks. Doesn't do it if I output audio over HDMI.

Yea, I got the same problem. You could fix it in Vista by using Alchemy, but in 7, it crashes Fallout. 😡 I knew I should have went with a Xonar instead.

I'm hoping New Vegas gets some polish and doesn't require as much tweaking to actually run. Won't hold my breath though, its still the Gamebyro engine and developed by OE. OE, for all their talent, has never been given the time and resources to actually finish a game. 🙁

This is not true. Steam only downloads the latest version if you have the option to keep up to date enabled/checked. If you disable this option it will not automatically download updates.

None of these tweaks are working. 🙁 I've improved the stability, but its still pretty much a certainty that the game is going to crash every 20 to 30 minutes.

I'm debating if I shouldn't put some effort into refreshing one of my Inspiron 531 test machines with some decent hardware. X2 5600, Radeon 5750, and a better PSU aren't terribly expansive, would work in the Dell motherboard and prevent the purchase of an OS license, and I logged 33 hours of OT this pay period. Work case, I suppose I could install my old copy of XP on it if Vista 32 becomes just as problematic.

Suppose, I could also go though the effort of setting up a dual boot between Win7 64 bit and XP on this machine, though I'm running short of hard drive space and I'd lose more than half my 8GB of RAM while running in XP. Also, hose my uptime having to reboot to XP. A VM is probably out, as the GPU support isn't up to that level.

And by default that option is enabled on every game. So if you didnt know about it, or forgot, you are screwed. Cuz if you delete and redownload you are automatically getting the newest one.

But I can understand it would be an unnecessary complication for them to keep multiple versions of stuff.
