Fallout 3 impressions

Yeah... yet another F3 Thread 🙂

The Joy of this game is in the little touches and the nostalgia I get from past Fallout games, yet now getting to see it like this is amazing.

Naturally this game has much taken right from Oblivion, yet I am so far very happy to say that in playing the game, I am more thinking to myself that I am playing Fallout with great graphics and sound rather than just "playing oblivion with guns".

The game looks great, but more importantly it runs very fluid on ultra settings running 2 gig ram, athalon x2 and 8800GT. I think this is due to a couple things -they scaled back on some of the foliage type effects that we saw in Oblivion like swaying grass. You dont see tons of tubleweed flying bye etc etc - while those things are cute , they kill fps. Also, so far the wasteland is not buzzing with critters as much as Oblivion was. This could be seen as good or bad - sure I run into a wolf or a giant ant here and there but not as much as I expected ( then again it IS a wasteland ). SO it feels like the scaled back on the effects, but it runs very well without having to spend hours tweaking settings. A good tradeoff.

That being said, the game looks Great and sets the mood - I especially like looking off in the distance and just seeing the overall devestation.

I have had 2 crashes, BOTH were when you first start as a Baby and your learning how to walk around. Yet - not crashes or even much of a stutter in the wasteland.

The combat system so far I like , kind of different being able to either run and gun or go into Action Point ( ? ) mode. You can click multiple times on a body part not to increase your aim but to shoot multiple times. THen you get a Max Payne like slow-Mo headshot if your lucky - very cool.

Character models are right from Oblivion - could have better variety but they are decent enough.

I do not like 3rd person mode at all so far, my guy looks like hes got a tree stuck up his rear. But the 3rd person mode that it switches to when your in Pause-combat looks cool. Thats ok I prefer 1st person.

Great Touch on the Pip-Boy.. but there are some annoyances. Inventory management is really lacking some organization and not being able to at least have ONE weapon hot key is really frustrating. I could be missing something - have not read the manual. Hitting TAB To close the thing doesnt feel right - can't get used to that! Maybe can be changed.

Im not giving a rating I hate ratings. either I like a game enough to keep playing, stop playing entirely , or get obsessed, lock myself in a dark room with some good beverages and tell the wife to leave me alone. This one is the latter 🙂

It reminded me of Half Life 2 when I was a baby, hahaha.

I am playing it on the 360 and am loving it....cant wait to go home and get further!

BTW : no crashed for me ^_^

So you do find you play more in run and gun mode or Action Point mode? Which mode do you like more and why?

They both have their advantages. You can't get critical hits outside of VATS, but you can shoot as much as you want. Also, you don't take damage while in VATS - it really is your "turn" to fight. So it's good if you have too many enemies to handle with regular FPS play. Oh, and I'm marveling at the game's stability too. It runs great on my 8800GT/3700+ (old processor) and only crashed once on loading a save game.

About 3 hours of play last night for me, zero crashes. I love the game all around, and I use VATS whenever I can.

I've only had one crash so far, and it was when I was exiting the game. If I recall correctly, I had that exact same issue in Oblivion until the second or third patch came out.

Performance is pretty good overall. It's probably due to the lack of grass. My draw distance is huge and it still runs pretty well. Going to see if I can handle large textures cause all text looks a little block/smudgy-wudgy right now.

I was too busy going over the art book (hot) so didn't go through the manual while installing like I usually do. Now that I've seen it mentioned, the animations are pretty stale, which is exactly how they were in Oblivion. Thus, I don't know if I can complain about that or not. On the bright side, the melee system has been carried over pretty well. Ladies and gentleman, I am now 'batting' well over .500🙂.

~7 hours in to it...phenomenal game. Couldn't be more pleased.

It even runs like a dream at max settings (no AA/AS though, 2x on both was fine but couldn't notice too much of a difference anyway) @ 1680x1050 on my system. I have had a few CTD's though.

Looks and runs beautiful on my system (8800GT/C2D 6300). I haven't crashed it yet, and it IMO looks better than Crysis while running better.

o'rly? better than crysis? screen shots?

There are hotkeys - hold down 1-8 on the items screen to hotkey anything in there. Weapons, stimpacks, etc..

I think the art style is head and shoulders above Crysis. For sheer graphics wankery Crysis still wins and will continue to win for quite awhile. I will say I am more engrossed in FO3 than I ever was in Crysis.

Here are my first impressions after playing 5 hours.

First of all the game had a hard time installing, but I think that is due to my DVD ROM. Its runs very good on my system but does have an annoying little background bug that pops up on the right side of the screen every so often. It has also crashed once.

As far as gameplay, well.... its ok. The VATS system is neat, but I have not had one instance where I did not go for the Head or Torso. Lots of different weapons is a nice touch too.

Graphics look pretty good, I like how everyone who ran Oblivion 2 years ago can now run this game at near max settings.

The radio could have more variety to the stations.

One major problem so far is that I feel like I am *still* running around in a world where I do quests that have no effect on the actual world itself. Oblivion felt this way BIG time.

Cool game, I will be enjoying it but I was expecting more than Oblivion in the future with guns. Im prob gonna sell it off after Im done with the first go around. I dont think I will be buying anymore Bethesda "Oblivion" games till they do some improvements to the A.I. and world.

Questions about how fallout compares to oblivion.

Is the leveling system similar to elder scrolls method? I.E. can you only increase attributes by an amount related to how much you leveled associated skills?

Does the world level with you?

I liked the look of oblivion and graphical similarites don't bother me, but gameplay in oblivion wasn't in line with how I want my RPG's to be. Is the gameplay similar to oblivion such that it feels like your playing by oblivions rules in a fallout setting?

I don't think FO3 has world leveling like Oblivion

I remember some site giving out a preview and mentioning having to run by a nest of mutants during a quest because it was his only strategy for survival

I just had my shit ruined by a couple of super mutants so I'm inclined to agree.

You know, my install scared me too. It was making my HD grind and took forever. ALso, the first load of the game... I thought for sure it would bomb. Once I loaded it the first time, no issues.

VATS - forgot the term was referring to AP mode.

Also to the other poster thanks for posting the hot key info, I figured it HAD to be there somewhere. I was having so much fun last night i didnt feel like opening the manual...if that makes any sense 🙂

I have only uncovered 2 stations so far, its a nice touch...enhances the immersion. Also like the little drones running around broadcasting ...that also like to randomly fry npcs when they feel like it .

Its great to hear everyone is having the same experience I am having with the fluidity. Basically it is the Oblivion engine afterall, tweaked to "perfection".

Funny the Half Life reference. This game has a Oblivion meets fallout meets half life 2 vibe to it. But like I said , I was relieved to find that most of all.. it feels like Fallout 🙂

Last I had heard, the world was leveled, but then each individual area was locked at the level you first entered it at.

And I'm enjoying the game much much more then I expected to.

Shooting heavy weapons super mutants in an arm to disarm them is useful since it takes so long to kill them even with head shots. The same thing goes for shooting melee super mutants in the leg to slow them down.

I also shot out the legs of one of the bullies in the vault before I beat him down with a baseball bat as he struggled to run away .

All of the leveling stuff is handled just like in Fallout 1/2. Skills increase when you level up (distribute points in the same manner to tagged/untagged skills), you also get perks. Enemies don't seem to level with you. I managed to take down a paladin and 2 super mutants, but they were poorly armed and I sneaked up on them (also had to hide behind some metal pillars while AP recharged). It really doesn't feel much like Oblivion except for the first person view. IMO with the art design and the way weapons behave it feels more like Bioshock (but don't use that as a comparison).

i havent played oblivion but have played mass effect and stalker. i loved mass effect but didnt like stalker. how does this game compare in terms of gameplay and the action? i didnt like the walking-around-too-much part in stalker. mass effect was, for me, action every second, not to mention the very compelling story. i just want to know how fallout 3 compares before i go out and spend money on the collector's edition. thanks for any enlightenments.

all right...all the good reviews (and the fact that I just got a $300 profit sharing check) made me decide to buy it.

i hope i don't regret it.
