Hey,

I greatly enjoyed Troika's games (the only one I have not played is Temple of Elemental Evil). I have acquired a copy of The Fallout Collection (1, 2, + tactics) and I am about to play the Fallout series for the first time. People have said that Arcanum is similar to Fallout, so I am very excited.

My questions:
1. What unofficial patches / fixpacks are recommended?
2. What mods are recommended that add content to the game beyond what was included in the original game?
3. Any tips that you can give me without spoilers (ultra minor spoilers acceptable)?

Teamx.ru seems to be referenced on many websites. I take it they are the leader in making mods for the Fallout series?

I would just play it with the offical patches and that's it. The game is awesome, no need to mod it in any way. The graphics are a bit dated of course - just so you are aware. They were pretty average even by the late 90's standards.

The community (teamx.ru) seems to have taken upon themselves to fix bugs that were left unfixed after the last official patch. After searching around, I have found this website with an installation guide. I think I am going to combine the community's bug fixes with the resolution patch mentioned in another thread and go from there. Any more suggestions?

Install guide that I found:

Check out this site and it's forums for everything you need about Fallout, No Mutants Allowed. The very first time you play it I would suggest playing it unmodded except for the official patch. I would also advise you to get the Fallout Resolution Patch, this patch is pretty much comparable to the resolution fixes that were made for the Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale Series where you can fully appreciate the scope, style, and art of the maps.

There's not much to patch with respect to fallout 1. A few quests added back in, and an update to the fallout 2 engine/interface.
Now then, fallout 2 has some pretty substantial updates. Some bear dude did a good job making fallout 2 work like it's supposed too and combined a ton of mods together.

Wow, talk about bringing back some fond memories. Fallout is one of my favorite games of all time, so much to see, do, and kill.

Headshot crits rock. And stealing (pickpocket) if done right can get you cash and levels quickly (your XP per pickpocket goes up with the number of successful thefts before you quit the screen, IIRC).

I played through FO1 without any user mods or patches and it worked fine. I did the same for FO2 and ran into some problems but no show stoppers.

Pickpocketing is key! Just save before you do it :p

FO2 has a show stopper in Las Vegas..so patch it before play b/c with those old games after you patch your save games are trashed, and you'll have to restart.

And another I would suggest would be Jagged Alliance 2. Those HS crits rock as well :)

For Fallout 1 the official patches are all you need.

Tip: PERception and a little luck are the key to being a sniper, along with targeted shots.

For skills, Small guns in the first half of the game and Energy Weapons in the second. Big guns and melee are to play with on a second or third play-through. Conversation skills and high INT make the game more fun as well. Doctor is a waste, first aid is useful.

Books can teach you many skills, but not energy weapons or conversation.

Bloody Mess is a required perk. I've usually picked Gifted as my second, then raised up INT with the extra points so I get enough skill points to make up for the initial loss.

Make sure your starting strength is decent. I seem to remember if you didnt add a point or two when starting out that you couldnt use the decent guns/armor early on in the game.

Later on you can buff strength with level perks/traits and power armor.

So if you like to play with all the toys, pay some attention to starting strength.

Get Gifted as one of your perks, it's frankly overpowered. Getting those stat bonuses is really, really nice. The slight hit to skills is inconsequential, even early on.

I was a FOOL. Not having played the game outside the demo before, as in many many many years ago, I made my strength -2 (3, 2 less from basic). How pathetic! I can only really use the most basic pistol without issues. I mean, spraying a burst of the assault rifle or the smg it can be fine but so many of the shots are terrible.

Strength is way too important for how guns really should work. Bleh, 5str for a pistol? If only I had known!
