*fake* white gold?

I bought some jewelry (diamong earrings) from a jewelery store at a local mall about a year ago. I'm not sure if it was always like this, but she (the girl I bought it for) noticed the white gold seemed to be *wearing* off in the back (where you can't see) sort of near where the stone is set.

Is it possible to be 10k gold covered w/ white gold? I looked at it, and scratched at the gold part to try and make more white gold come off, but couldn't.

Might it have to do with how diamonds are set in white gold w/ yellow gold?

Thanks
Jacob

white gold isn't a pure metal...i'm pretty sure it's gold + copper, so you might be seeing the effects of that 🙂 (that's why i went with platinum, no degradation of color)

Is it completely yellow? or just turn slightly off white? It is normal for white gold to do this, so just take it back to the jewelers and have it polish, bling bling.

What the hell is white gold? Is that platinum? If it's platinum, call it platinum, unless you call gold "yellow silver" and silver "white copper".

What the hell is white gold? A metal different than gold, silver, and platinum.

It would make no sense to call white gold "platinum".. as it isn't platinum. Just like gold isn't "yellow silver".

white gold

Oh it's fake platinum!

"White gold" is a gold alloy and is not truly white. White gold jewelry is usually plated with rhodium to give it a bright white appearance.

Over time, this plating will wear thin and the actual yellow-tinged color of the white gold will start to show through. This is normal and has nothing to do with the diamond or the quality of the jewelry.

You can get it replated with rhodium if you want to. I don't think it's terribly expensive (less than $50), you could call some jewelry stores and ask them about it.

Edit: too slow 🙁

yeah my rings doing that too...

whit gold is just gold and another metal.. im not completely sure what. my ring is from zales and they replate it or whatever for free... maybe the place you got it does too?

Thats weird, I've had a white gold ring for several years, almost always on, and it hasn't lost its color at all.
Perhaps the rhodium plating is thick on your ring, or it doesn't move on your finger much. I believe some people's body chemistry (i.e. what's in their sweat) can even accelerate the tarnishing process. Some people say their white gold can go 5+ years without rhodium plating.

yes, the jeweler was telling me about a lady that would have reactions to the metal in her ring during the summer...cause she ate too many tomatoes out of her garden 🙂
