Fake Purses in NYC

I went to NYC with my family, and the girls wanted to buy some purses. In Chinatown we had all these people try to get us to go their secret underground stores or behind the wall rooms. Some places outright sold them while some were very secretive.

It almost seemed like a psychological way to get the buyers more excited about buying counterfeit merchandise. So are they taking these precautions to help their sales or are they trying to hide their illegal trade practices?

I'd also assume that they don't have permits for anything.

That's probably it. fake designer clothes, accessories, etc. are basically considered counterfeit. And it's not just small no-name shops that get in trouble for stuff like this. Target was charged with selling similar merchandise just a year or two ago.

EDIT: wasn't even a year ago: linky

That's a rat hat?

And a poorly made one, even by rat hat standards. I have no choice but to recommend your prompt termination to the board of directors nothing short of the approval of Peterman himself will save you this time.

It's over the place on Canal street. I see cops walk by and nothing happens. Who wants a girl that wears fake stuff?

?

Who cares if it's fake? I say all the better to a girl who wears fake stuff. Shows that they enough self pride to not blow $500 on a purse to make them be fashionable.

That doesn't mean she's any less materialistic than the one that buys the real stuff...

by and large, the fashion industry looks the other way.

more people wearing purses with giant logos = free publicity, and the girl buying a $20 purse probably doesn't have the money/inclination to buy the $1,000+ "real" version (but they might buy the real handbag or other lower-priced accessories)

Yep, It was around Canal Street, and there were a ton of cops. I even saw a few cops look intently at stores, and the employees "guarding" the store were always looking around. I'd rather marry a girl who can look fashionable for $50 vs. $500. More money for me for electronics. :)

I was on Canal st about a month ago. There was 5 guys with there suitcases full of purses. My SO had one in her hand when all of a sudden they started shutting them yelling cops cops. there was 4 black guys and a middle eastern guys guess who got caught.

I thought the cop was going to tackle him but he just stopped in front of him and grabbed him. Ill tell you it wasnt the first time its happened to them cause it looked like an olympic race. They executed the close and run perfect and didnt lose 1 purse.

Unfortunately my SO dropped the purse back into the suitcase.

If you can't afford the real ones, why buy the fake ones to look like you can afford it? Just buy the affordable no name stuff.

this is the price that companies pay to have china make their products.

as an example, coach used to pride themselves on making their genuine leather purses in the USA. even they had to move production to china. and we know how morally upright the chinese are. all you need to do is bribe one guy in coach's chinese factory for the recipe and there you have it. and people wonder why chinese counterfeits are so real...

by the way, the stuff that goes on in NYC, SF, LA, chicago, etc. is only a small fraction of what goes on in places like hong kong, beijing, bangkok, and any other urban asian city.

drugs, prostitution, money laundering, counterfeiting: you can try to get rid of it, but it ain't happening anytime soon.

I think what he means is she's still buying it to show off for other people.

If she was really not materialistic, she'd buy the cheaper non-fashion brand purse, rather than spend her money on a fake logo.

everyone is materialistic to some extent, unless you're a naked monk living in a cave... if she likes the way the purse looks, who cares if they spend $20 on a knockoff instead of a grand for the real thing.

I read an article about how counterfeiters are occasionally busted by police in NYC. IIRC, LVMH, for one, contributes to the effort somehow. I think the ambiance is a side effect; just think about how much the hidden space and the lookouts cost.

I agree with your reasoning, but over-saturation will hurt the brand value at some point. A side point: the girls buying the real items are usually not paying themselves.
