Fake E mail sent to me with BAT file attached?

I just got an email made up to look like it was being returned undeliverable. It was sent to someone I never heard of and never sent any emails to,you could tell it was fake and made to look real.Anyway it had a BAT file attached to it,I deleted it and cant remember what it was named.
So what is a BAT file and would it have caused my system damage?

"BAT" is short for "batch". It's a file that contains any number of a series of commands. For example, I use batch files for backing up data. But, they can be written to do all kinds of nasty things. For example:

format c:

Russ, NCNE

Well good thing I didnt open it!I am trying to remember what it was named,i keep thinking it was something "bacon" but i dont think so?...
I just knew it was fake,I was going to save it and send it to one of you guys and have you disect it but was afraid some one wouldf get on the puter and open it,so i deleted it.Better safe than sorry.
I really wish I knew what itwas.Damn!

.bat is a batch file. its a ms dos like program utility that performs tasks: in email is most likely a virus. good thing you deleted it!
