i had an offer to buy an opteron 165 for 360 US$ + $20 shipping....is this a fair price...IMO its OKAY seeing as how its the same ball park as monarch which is the only listing pricewatch comes up with (although they are out of stock until mid jan at least) I know these cpus will become rarer since AMD stopped shipping them to retail outlets....but idk if i should drop ~400 on one.

You should be able to get a 170 for over $360... If you can't find the Opty 167/170 for a fair price, just get the X2 3800 since they're pretty cheap also.

I got my OEM 170 from NewEgg last week for $410. When I got it, it wasn't even new! It was obvious that someone had had a heatsink on it... scratches and nicks and stuff. It's doing 2.7GHz (although no more) so I'm reluctant to return it in case I get something less overclockable.

Thats a nice chip Zim don't return - however, I don' buy OEM for this reason BTW - nothing to with warranty.. just don't want anyones paws on it but AMD's... no mistake with hologram box tape.

Thanks, this is good news for me. I wasn't hoping so much for a huge overclock, I was hoping for ~2.4ghz on stock voltage. That's fast enough for me, and not raising voltage means I can concentrate on having a quiet computer.

well I would call Newegg and compalin that the chip was used and not new..maybe they will give $$ for next order

I would love to have gotten the chip you got..my goal with a 165 or 170 is 2700..to keep near same speed as my current venice@2750 that I want to replace.....

My personal luck buying a new chip and OCing sucks..this venice 3200@2750 I got from ATer ...he was running 2800 at same vcore as me on same mobo(I have an excellent PSU and quality components..who knows why there was a difference but I was thrilled with 2750 stable) but he was hitting 2800 Prime95 18hrs+

I could only get 2800@1.62v...to much so I am at 1.57v@2750....
