Failed Windows XP Updates - Anyone else having this problem?

On two PC's that are running Windows XP Professional, they are trying to download and install a new security update (Security Update for Windows XP (KB913446)) and both download BUT fail to install.

Is anyone esle having this problem???

I looked but didn't see anyone else mentioning this.

It woudn't install for me the first couple times it downloaded from Win update...so I went to MS dowload center and downloaded it and then instralled it from my MS updates folder on my D drive, installed without a hitch,

I have had this happen a few times in the past, and I have been able to take care of it the same way.

no idea why it happens , but it does.

Are you trying to update via the windowsupdate website or are you using automatic updates?

I havent had a problem with that specific update. I have found that, if an update wont install via the website, then enabling automatic updates will usually work, and vice versa. Maybe give that a go if you havent already.

Yeah, it happened to me, first time I've ever had a Windows update fail. After a restart, I tried again a few hours later and it worked.

Yeah, it wasn't a problem with the update itself, it was the delivery mechanism. Everything should be OK now. More info below:

? Automatic Updates (AU): AU customers need take no action: the new updates will automatically download.
? Windows Server Update Services (WSUS): WSUS Administrators who had synchronized their WSUS Server to obtain the updates released on Tuesday 14 February, before 8:30PM PST that evening should manually synchronize their WSUS Servers and approve the new updates.
? Systems Management Server 2003 with the Inventory Tool for Microsoft Updates (ITMU): SMS Administrators should who had synchronized their servers to obtain the updates released on Tuesday 14 February, before 8:30PM PST that evening should re-synchronize their servers for the latest updates.
? Microsoft Update (MU) and Windows Update: Customers who visited MU and WU before 8:30 PM on Tuesday February 14th, should revisit MU or WU and accept the downloads being offered to them.

I reinstalled my whole damn operating system yesterday because I thought I had a virus or a corrupted OS when the Update process would freeze up..... so mad right now!!!

And that's what's holding you back. You can check every single file there for authenticity if you want. The webmasters even encourage you do so. They go as far as to challenge anyone who can find something fishy with it. They even provide links to the tools you can use to monitor it all.

That's fine. I'm sure they're legit, but I don't feel like going through the process of validating every update.

It's irrelevant anyway, since I use Automatic Updates.

You would be mistaken. And the first rule is trust no one but the vendor. MS will fix the problem if someone backdoors them. You cannot get that guarantee from the 3rd party.

I use auto for home and the security bulletin links for work. You have not worked with MS Premier before. You do not want to do significant support and try to explain why you got a MS patch from a 3rd party site.

There are updates that get rereleased as well. Although both copies may be legit, only one is correct. Asking for trouble going to a third party.

I have the same problem and I've been considering formatting for the past few weeks.

There are a few updates (4) from 1-2 months ago which I have not been able to install.
Now, I cannot install the ones released on tuesday, about 7 in all.

I've tried downloading the updates and running them myself, but no luck.
I also tried same mode and no go either, and the windows update website doesn't respond under safe mode for me.

I created a new account with full privileges and that didn't help either.

XP MCE 2005 Legit.

Anybody?

Guys, just so you know.

Any problems arrising from the installation of a security update or service pack entitles you to a free support incident with Microsoft. I would encourage you to just give them a call before you frustrate yourself.

They can typically take a look at a few logs files and get you fixed in no time.

Remember back in the day, when MS had macro-virus infected Word documents on their FTP site? Even the primary vendor isn't immune to potential contamination/corruption of files.

Yes. Dang, that was like Word 4 days. I think they sent out a fix too. Can't remember as we weren't affected.

Yes it would take the almighty to make that happen today. I'm not even sure what team handles that stuff internally. It's one of those "could tell you but then would have to shoot you" things.
