Failed Win2k Installation

I have a win98/2K dualboot setup. After installing a Via 4.29Beta driver into Win2K, my system BSODed and was unrecoverable. I tried reinstalling Win2k through 98 2 times and it failed on me both times. After the third attempt, it finally reinstalled.

My problem is with the boot up screen. The DOS screen which asks me what OS I want to load has Win2K listed 3 times. How do I get rid of the other 2 Win2ks (which are both dead links)?
 
You can get rid of the other two instances of W2K in the boot menu by editing boot.ini (in the root directory of your primary partition). Do this from within W2K. You'll have to tell Explorer to allow you to see protected system files, then remove its read only attribute and edit it with notepad. Just delete each entire line for each of the extra instances. They should be the second and third instances in the file. Be careful to delete the entire line and ONLY the entire line for each instance. If you farkle boot.ini you will have to do a repair install of W2K. You should restore the read only attribute to boot.ini after you have corrected it. The file should normally read only, hidden, and system attributes.

For future reference, when you install W2K you are far better off NOT installing it from within Win98. Just boot off the W2K setup CD by telling your BIOS to boot first from the CD-ROM drive. If your system doesn't support booting from CD (unlikely these days, at least on systems that will run W2K) then you can use the makeboot utility on the CD to make the four floppy boot diskettes. In any case, you are far better off installing W2K this way than from DOS or from within W9X.

If you have a CDRW to install with W2k, don't forget to use the F6 option during the install. You will only have a few seconds to respond and then W2k will go on without installing SCSI drivers that your IDE CDRW needs to burn.
If you miss this point, start over and pay attention.
After executing F6 SCSI option, just ignore other requests and continue with install.
 
Just got home ahead of the snowstorm.

I erased those lines off of Boot.ini and it worked. Thanks Jim. My third attempt at reinstalling Win2K worked so right now I have to update all my tweaks and links to other progs. Fortunately, I had a lean Win2K system without alot of bloat so I should be able to get it all running in a few hours.
