Failed POST, then Boot, then Shut Down -> New Asus P4S333 & 1.6A

Mogal

I just finished assembling (from ALL new parts) a P4 1.6A.

The mobo is an ASUS P4S333.
I'm using a new ANTEC case with a 300 watt PS.
512 Crucial RAM
ATI Radeon 8500
WD 100G HD
LS120 floppy
Toshiba 16x DVD

When I first powered up I got a "System Failed CPU Test" (This puppy has the VOCAL POST msgs). This is the msg I get everytime except:

I tried several times to reseat the CPU with no real change. Then I tried firing up with the heat sink off (a minute or two isn't going to fry a P4). Sure enough, I got a one beep successful POST, and the thing went right to BIOs setup. A minute later it just shut down. If I fiddle around I can get this same thing to happen again - that is, a boot then a shut down. But I can not seem to get it to boot if the heatsink is in place. This makes me think I've got a defective mobo ? Does this sound right ? Any other suggestions ?

I'm guessing the mobo. I'm guessing the heatsink is tensioning the circuit board and flushing out a weak spot or solder joint ? The only other factor that MAY be relevent is the reset button does not seem to be working - Power button is OK, but the reset button doesn't seem to be doing anything - I'll have to play with it some more. Looking for suggestions.

THANKS

GS

Geesh, I gotta bump my own post. Is anybody out there ?

What kind of symptoms might one see if the mobo was grounded to the case some where ?

Do my symptoms fit a mobo touching the case (I'm wondering if the weight of heatsink could be pressing the bottom to just touch the case) ?

Somebody give me something - please !

I have the Abit SA6R and have recently started have system crashes and failures to post. Like you, i too have crucial memory. After gathering info from alt.comp.mainboard.abit, it seems crucial doesnt run very well with many Abit boards in most peoples opinion. So, from my own personal experience, if i was you, thats where i would start. Do you have any other memory you can try to see if thats the problem?

Hey Dude,

Thanks for taking the time. I do appreciate it.

On extremely close examination with a magnifing glass, I found a bent pin in one corner of the CPU. I managed to straighten it out with an Xacto knife. I was real careful putting it in, but I must have screwed up. I will kick myself at my earliest convinience.

Thanks again - I hope I don't have problems with the Crucial once I get to overclocking !

i'm glad it was a bent pin.
i just ordered almost exactly the same combo as you have posted and i'll check the cpu pins closely before i put it into the socket

Just think of the fun with the new AMD processors this fall
with about 700 & 916 pins. (can't remember exactly)
PLUS they should be smaller than the current AMD's.
😀
