failed pings of 2 XP machines through router

I have two macnines that I'm trying to get networked together through the router, and tried to ping and got total "request time out" results,

so I guess I have router issues?

they are both plugged into the same (a Linksys RT31P2 Broadband router)
and both can connect to the internet at full cable speeds, via their ethernet cables, without any problems.

what they can't do is talk to each other...
any suggestions what to try next? I'm a total newbie to networking..

Wierd they should be able to connect to the internet but not eachother, is the windows firewall turned off? Not sure if it blocks pings, but it's not really needed when behind a NAT router anyway. There might also be a setting on the router preventing it... there has to be something specifically preventing it coz the ports on the router are usually just a seperate switch built into the case, so they will always allow the local machines to talk by default.

thanks you werre right, I had to turn off both windows firewalls. duh. got to leave it to the NAT router firewall. whatever that is!
all working ok now, though I feel a little nervous with a firewall I can see at all.

thanks again, paul
