Failed data recovery attempt...why?

A little background...

Typically, when attempting data recovery, I simply set the hard drive in question as a secondary master, and use the different commercial software packages that I have. Pretty straightforward.

Just for fun, I attempted recovery of my external USB 2.0 HDD. I had some files on there that I no longer needed so I deleted them. I attempted reovery and most of the files were recovered, but they were largely corrupted. Some were intact, but most had CRC errors.

Is this normal? Should recovery always be attempted off of an IDE HDD, not a USB one? I never knew this to be the case...
