I think we did this:

Ruination of an industry!

As much as we use GPUs to crunch with subtle flaws in design and production will now be evident. In as much as gamers would tax high end cards for hours at a time, crunchers are the ultimate test of the GPU. Beware Nvidia and ATI, for your hardware MTBF will drop dramatically now that you have decided to partner with Stanford.

We of team anandtech proudly use both makers to fold proteins round the clock and we are amused by the faint hint of burning silicone. Make your coolers wisely and choose the quality of your parts with care because the lead of the graphics industry is at stake.

I keep a fire extinguisher handy just in case one of my many builds doesn't have good contact with heat sink or in the event of a fan failure. I've seen both. Smoke, no fire.

I once saw fire and smoke. Way back when you had to set IRQ settings by using switches on the peripheral cards, we were testing a color CGA video card that was supposed to give us 132 x 80 displays (back in the old mainframe terminal days). One setting, put the card in, turned it on, the monitor went frizt and small flames and smoke came out of the monitor.

Looking at the instructions, buried way back in the back of the manual was a warning that there was the potential to fry the monitor. DOH! :Q

And to try and steer this back on course, (my bad), I agree with Gravity. The video card manuf. should hang on to their hats, if they thought gamers stressed their components, they haven't seen anything yet. 😀

Two G92 GTS here folding non-stop, here's hoping they hold up.

I have BIOS modded them both to run the fan at 100% (in addition to a moderate 750/1000 overclock).

FWIW furmark gets them hotter than folding does. I'm not too worried about them.

Shouldn't that be Silicon?😛, I think Silicone is the rubbery sealant 😉.

I have a single GTS folding @ 0% fan speed. Should I be worried? 😛
I think my G92 will be safe with watercooling. Running at a nice 42C OCed and Folding.

You are correct my good sir. Silicone is a organic/inorganic polymer with Si-O backbone and organic groups off of it. Chips are usually Si and SiO2 and the like.

Sure, but imagine if you took all the parts off of those cards that are required to actually output video. Save $$ for the card makers, pass increased speed onto us crunchers. I'd buy one. My fleet uses onboard chipsets or remote access if I need to see what the box is up to...
