Couple of my buddies work there. It's cool to have such a great place less than 10 miles from my house !

Shouldn't be too hard, a guy I went to school has their MK4-Roadster registered. He drives it around town all summer. This is in Massachusetts so the laws may very from state to state on kit cars.

I remember when people would put the lamborghini kits on fiero's in the late 80's/early 90's. I know that isn't a 100% kit car but they DMW let them get registered.

I've had an eye on that for a while...would be a lot of fun to build.

Looks awesome. I really like Factory Five's Cobra kits and their '32 look-alike. With a 400hp Subaru engine, the 818 would be a blast. Anyone catch what differential they're using and how strong it is?

from the website:
"As much of the donor car as possible was used in the design of the 818 in order to keep build cost low. The unique layout of the Impreza allows for the entire engine and transaxle unit to be moved to the rear of the car and be used to drive the rear wheels with a simple locking collar installed in place of the center differential. This longitudinal mid-mounted flat four gives excellent balance from being both low slung and mounted behind the drivers compartment. In addition, this solves one of the most difficult roadblocks to overcome in mid-engine car design, sourcing of the transaxle. In addition to the drivetrain, all of the steering, cooling and braking systems are retained from the donor as well."

unfortunately I'm not car savvy and I don't get it, or I can't picture it in my head.

Too bad they aren't keeping it AWD, that would have been amazing! I don't know much about the Subie transmission/AWD system, but I am guessing they are basically just getting rid of the front half of the AWD system, and just connecting right to the rear differential. They are likely making the layout so you don't have to have a cut drive shaft or anything, just bolt the transmission to the rear differential. This seems like a really slick idea, the GTM required $$$ transmission, I think from a porsche? Looking forward to following this kit car!

Edit: After looking at it, it looks like it IS the front part of the AWD system, so the front drive wheels are in the back.. like a mullet drivetrain!

I'm sure it's a solid kit, and would make for a very fun car, but I really don't like the design. The rest of their line has real style but this has too much boy-racer/batmobile aesthetic for me. I wish they would redesign and bring back the Spyder GT, that was my favorite:

so what aside from the kit do you need for the car? or does it come with everything you need, and you just need to assemble it? i know nothing about kit cars.

$10k for that kind of vehicle is a hell of a deal IMO.

I don't think they have finalized their design yet. If you look on their site they have images of a lot of the design contest winners, all of which are different cars. The images of what appear to be actual physical cars don't appear to be what's presented in the image in the OP.

I've been watching this for a while as well, and I really, REALLY hope they didn't pick the one in this thread.

I'm also moderately disappointed to learn that it is not going to be AWD. Apparently I missed that before.

Looks a bit like a cutesy-er Exige.

Not bad, and the price is very tempting.

Pretty cool, I know a guy who built a low cost, he said it was alot of fun. But didn't like the idea of taking it on the open road with the amount of idiots running around. He also has a Lotus Espirt, and a few of the europas(not sure how many are parts cars though).

Maybe, but I was a little surprised that they did not include the car with an engine. :p

That's the norm for a kit car (especially at $10k). Most people will probably be picking up used/wrecked WRXs to swap over.

If you think it's expensive, look up the price for a complete GTM and prepare to be shocked. :p

They could. Then it would fall under normal production car rules and would more than double the price. With a small production run like this, price would actually probably more than triple.
