FACTCHECK.ORG is fact-checking a bogus anti-Bush ad from MoveOn.

The Annenberg Foundation's factcheck.org is fact-checking a bogus anti-Bush ad from MoveOn.

The latest TV ad from the Moveon.org Voter Fund says "George Bush wants to eliminate overtime pay for 8 million workers," referring to new overtime rules that the Department of Labor has proposed. The 8-million figure (hotly denied by the Bush administration, of course) comes from a study by the labor-funded Economic Policy Institute.

The ad misquotes the study, however. What the study actually says is that an estimated 8 million would lose the legal right to premium overtime rates should they work more than 40 hours per week. It does not say they would actually lose pay as the ad says. In fact, the 8-million figure is inflated by many part-time workers who never get overtime work, or overtime pay, even though they now have the right to it.
Good to see organizations following up on these things. As an old boy back in Kentucky once told me, "desperate men do desperate things".

Here We Go Again: Bush Exaggerates Tax Cuts

The President can?t keep his figures straight. And most people are getting less than he implies.

fuzzy math eh?

At least they look at both sides which is one hell of a lot more than can be said for many organizations/people.

So are you complain the ad doesn't say "estimated". When ever any talks about over time pay it is the time and a half pay. If a person isn't paid more it isn't overtime pay so thier is nothing wrong with what the ad says?

They have an old sayin' in Tennessee too. Fool me once, ummm, shame on Dick Cheney. Fool me twice, won't get fooled again? Yeah, that's it.

Last year we owed about $200, and this year we're getting back $1,300 -- looks like about the "average" which the President has stated. And, if anyone had any doubts, I am far from the "very rich", being a company grade military officer with a wife who doesn't work.

wow, anecdotal evidence is incredibly convincing....

NOT!!!

So, if it's only 4 million or 2 million workers who aren't getting overtime that isn't significant? (4-5 million is the "realistic" number I've seen).

If I were Bush I'd be worried about turning Republicans into Democrats. A lot of families are going to be pissed whe they find out mom or dad has to work 70 hours a week, but won't get overtime in their $40K per year "salaried" job. That's an issue that will resonate with voters.

Last year I got back $3000 this year I got back only $1800. What exactly is your point?

3 years ago I was paying 800-1200 per year even in claiming no exemptions.

I make roughly the same and pay less taxes through the year while claiming 1 exception, plus getting back 700-900 per year

His point would be that his salary didn't change and that his tax liability went down - thus providing for a larger refund if he didn't change his withholdings.

Let me guess - your income, deduction status, or with-holdings changed from last year - no?
