I am not sure how this moved to a thread about healthcare, but just because everyone in the US isn't covered by some healthcare plan doesn't mean that they don't receive healthcare. I live in Los Angeles, and the county hospitals take all patients and there is minimal cost if any to the people there. Also no person can be turned away in the case of an emergency, so pretty much everyone is taken care of.

I wonder if it is because we have a lot more people.

nope. it's because they spend all their govt money on healthcare. :)

That sucks. They should let the people spend their own money on what they want to buy.

True. And how many millions of people in the United States don't have basic healthcare needs?

It is not the governments job to take care of you.

Perhaps, perhaps not, but when an overwhelming percentage of the population does not have adequate medical care, does not have enough money to live on and is living in poverty, something is not right. Something needs to change. And don't give me "it's their own fault"

Whose fault is it then? Are you saying that they are not responsible for their own actions?

You think the X million children without healthcare are responsible for their "own actions"? And do you think that when those children grow up and most likely do not have health care, they are responsible for their "actions" that "put them" in that situation?

After having lots of family members with cancer and other diseases and also with my sister having diabetes, I am very glad we have this. So no, it doesn't suck. I sleep better at night.

Apparently he wants people 'who can afford it' to pay for the people who can't...thus evening the playing field and creating equality between career bums and hard-working people. :D

Not a bad idea, ala Canada, Sweden, Norway, Finland, etc, etc. No we wouldn't have billions to spend on military but if we could manage to stay in our own affairs, we wouldn't need to. Mild Democratic Socialism is one of the finest forms of government, and I predict that in the coming decades it will be proven even more across the world. Mark my words.

Our government is headed that way, and it is fostering a sub-society of dependency. Why do for yourself what the government does for you? I hope we never have a system of socialized medicine. People need to be responsible for themselves AND their children. It is not the government's job to provide money, heathcare, or retirement. It isn't open for interpretation.

Oh isn't it? I'd say it clearly is if, as you claim, or government is headed that way. With tax cuts beneffiting Bush and his twelve friends with ungodly proportions of the return, it's no surprise millions upon millions of people can't afford healthcare. The polarization of the upper and lower classes will just cast us back hundreds of years.
