Facetime question

Is Facetime like skype video calling? Can you use it to see and talk to people internationally or is it just within US?
 
It works with anyone with an iPod Touch 4th Gen or iPhone 4, on WiFi. I don't think that international boundaries matter.

I don't know anyone overseas with an iPhone 4, so I can't borrow my roommates phone to check.
 
If I can get confirmation it works, I'm going to order bunch of iPod touch and send it to friends and family overseas. It would be awesome to use it like a video phone around the house without having to sit front of a computer with a camera.
 
I guess that they are a little cheaper than netbooks with webcams.

It works internationally.
I am in US on AT&T iPhone 4. My wife (gave her AT&T iphone 4 - jailbroken and unlocked it) is in Canada.

We are using facetime. All she had to do was update her carrier settings using itunes in Canada on iPhone 4 to activate facetime.

With new itouch, it should just work over wifi.

i believe it activates by SMS or MMS on iphone currently (ios 4/4.0.1/4.0.2). IIRC, apple servers associate each iphone4 with their phone numbers.

With ios 4.1 scheduled to release next week (should be pre-installed on all new ipod touch), it is probably switching to email addresses (or maybe mac address logging) ?
