FaceTime app in Mac app store

So I just heard that Apple is now selling a $0.99 FaceTime app for Macs in the app store.

Supposed to be included in the new MacBook Pros.

Honestly I'm not sure what they're trying to do by charging for it. It's not that $0.99 is an unreasonable amount, but shouldn't they want to maximize the number of people who have FaceTime capability? I mean, a lot of people won't get it specifically because it costs money, no matter how cheap it is.

Are there any open source FaceTime clients? Isn't FT supposed to be built on open standards?

Yeah, not sure about that idea. However, it took them a while to get it out. Maybe they just want to recoup some costs.

I have a Mac mini, but I don't know if my Logitech PC webcam is compatible with this.

It's an accounting issue. They don't want to charge for it, but they have to because of same issue that made them charge to enable wireless-n.

So they had HD cameras in the older models maybe, but no software at the time to take advantage of it I guess?

No HD cameras in the older versions. The newest ones have the HD camera.

Ok, then why charge the fee? The new ones will all come with FaceTime by default, and I don't think you need different hardware to get FaceTime working.

With the 802.11n thing, it was the fact that the hardware support N, but Apple advertised it as 802.11g, so if people wanted N on their older hardware that did support it, they needed to pay $1.99.

The MacBook Air is advertised as having a FaceTime camera, the new MBPs are advertised as having FaceTime HD cameras. I would imagine that the software supports both, so why is it an accounting issue?

If you have answers great, if not, no big deal, I don't really expect you to.

I don't have the answer and we can only speculate, but I believe it's because it really is a new feature that wasn't available from Apple at the time it was released. And I'm thinking more for the older MB/MBA/MBP.

The MBA that was advertised as having a FaceTime camera is a strange one.
