*facepalm* Still looking for a budget Server 2k3 backup solution

Ns1

No Lifer
As the topic states, anything UNDER 500 out there?

Basic Win2k3 server, MS-SQL (currently being backup'd by a maintenance plan) to an external HD every night.

NOTHING is currently being done on the files however...

I'd prefer an imaging type backup solution w/an option to restore individual files (ala Backup Exec) but I don't think such a solution can be afforded here.

Anyway, let me know what you guys got so I can draft some proposals =X

I hate backups.

//edit

sorry, just realized my title was missing a key word

NovaBACKUP Server by NovaStor @ $200. Same program marketed by DT Utilities as PC Backup Server Edition, same price. I would recommend buying from NovaStor since the company seems to be a bit more stable.

The workstation version of Veritas Backup Exec changed hands from Veritas to Stomp Soft to Miga Soft to DT Utilities, but I'm not sure about the server version.

For ~$70.00, NTI's Backup Now 5 Advanced reportedly supports W2K3 Server, but I'm not sure if it provides everything you need.

thanks, I'll check those out later.

tcsenter, now that's a name I haven't seen in a long while.

Yea, NTBackup is there. It won't give you a bare-metal restore AFAIK but it can easily do automated daily backups and individual file restores.

Hey, not to hijack the guy's thread, but did you see that Windows 7 is bringing its own disk imaging and restore feature? Has basic but meaningful features, such as storing the image files to local drive or network, removable storage, burn directly to optical, et. al. I can see this really putting a dent in the business of Acronis, Norton, and the like. Wonder if MS is going to get sued for more 'bundling'. Personally, I am thrilled at the prospect of Windows having its own disk imaging and restore functionality, given that third-party solutions are prohibitively expensive for small systems builders who don't have the means or need to purchase a few thousand licenses up front.

Instead of paying for something like Acronis you could always use a free solution like partimage.

Good question! I've heard the name partimage but never tried it. I'll have to check it out.

Did you miss this feature in Vista/Server 08?

If its there, apparently I did, but I'm not finding it on this Vista Home Premium system. Only the regular file backup.

It's in Vista Business and Ultimate. Home Premium missed out on that feature. It will be included in Win7 Pro and up.

for some reason I have always used it for PE-based imaging (works great for that) and never realized that it was released as an XP app😛 :facepalm; 😛
