/facepalm- If you live in NY stop asking me for "Iodine" pills.

How about California? LA/SF?

My parents keep calling me to stay indoors and avoid the rain. The clouds are supposed to hit the Cali border today.

Oooh maybe with the fear mongering Tahoe will be less busy for the powder day on Saturday! 😱:awe:

Is there a shortage of iodine pills? Maybe i should scavenge for some here in the north east and resell them at jacked up prices to left coasters or something, lol.
Lots of people already have iodine in their medicine cabinet. It's that black shit in a glass bottle. Smells kinda weird. Hurts like alcohol when applied to an open wound.

This one is made by the famous racist law maker Jim Crow

Something fun you can try at home is mixing ammonia (NH3) with solid iodone (I2). It will form nitrogen triodide, a strong oxidizing and unstable compound.

Same people probably bought up all the cipro.

Iodine collects in the thyroid. One specific kind of effect of specific radiation exposure is to build up in the thyroid, causing cancer. Its an iodine isotope. If the thyroid is already full of non radioactive iodine your body won't absorb it.

What are iodine pills supposed to do that would help?

I remember a Vice Guide To Travel special where they went to Chernobyl involved the hosts drinking their faces off before and during the trip in order to stem radiation poisoning. I assume this approximates that effect?

Radioactive fallout may contain a significant amount of radioactive iodine. The thyroid scavenges iodine for its needs so radioactive material can accumulate there causing cancer. The idea of taking pills is that the thyroid becomes saturated with safe iodine. That way one avoids some nasty problems. The amount we could get here is miniscule and therefore insignificant.

Apparently there was a run on Geiger counter too...
That would be so much fun to have as a kid. I remember using a light meter and a sound meter just to check light and sound levels of things. Crawl under the bed and check what the light level is down there!
At night when standing under a street lamp, it seems really bright when the light is shining directly on the meter, but it's still dimmer than indirect sun light! Amazing.

I like how a radiation leak (not a meltdown) across the pacific ocean has people paranoid about fallout.

By the time it hits continental US, it'll be so dispersed that it really won't make a difference.

Chernobyl is the biggest nuclear power plant disaster in the history of mankind.
Nuclear weapons testing in the 50s and 60s was like 1000 Chernobyl's....

Even if all the nuclear power plants in Japan have total meltdowns, the fallout in the USA is likely to result in 0 cases of disease or death.

Anyhow, I really hope that they get things under control over there, not because it will have any affect on fallout conditions here, but because meltdowns could make a large portion of Japan uninhabitable, and will hurt/kill many people over many years.

You couldn't be more wrong, this is what they want you to think. Number one priority for the government right now is not to cause a panic they can't tell people the truth. What would happen if millions of people found out that they will die over several years because of radiation poisoning. Radiation also mutates genes and causes all kinds of diseases, such as MS and autism.

I agree.
People in the US right now are more concerned with genetic mutation. It can affect the future generation like when you have kids.
This is the bigger concern than worrying about death

the shortage of iodine is a government conspiracy. they are trying to induce fear so they can pass another law similar to the patriot act!

What would happen if millions of people found out? Absolutely nothing. They are Japanese after all and they have built up a resistance to radiation. Haven't you read your history books, doofus? Now go and grab me some of that anodyne stuff they keep talkin about.

Peace

You act like the government knows more than anyone else. Our government is full of retards that know nothing.
