Facebooks helps target military users

Various OPSEC and DoD forums have indicated (via open source reporting) that British forces have been targeted by terrorist/insurgent cells in
the Southwest Asia AOR (which includes Afghanistan and Iraq) by using this feature.

Kind of sucks that Facebook turns on these features by default. The pdf shows how to turn it off.

Yea, I heard about this in emails. I don't ever use facebook (not destined for iraq for that matter either) so I don't have to worry about it.

This isn't FB's fault. Even though checking in is enabled by default, no one forces you to check in...

That's like saying, because I have the ability to shout at the top of my lungs that I am at a location, my power of speech is compromising security.

Guess it doesn't work the way I thought it did. I was thinking checking in was just logging in. There's another button to push? Saw there was also an option for your friends to check you in that's on by default.
