Facebook will be moving forward with a controversial plan to give third-party developers and external websites the ability to access users' home addresses and cellphone numbers in the face of criticism from privacy experts, users, and even congressmen.

Facebook quietly announced the new policy in a note posted to its Developer Blog in January. It suspended the feature just three days later following user outcry, while promising that it would be "re-enabling this improved feature in the next few weeks."

In response to a letter penned by Representatives Edward Markey (D-Mass.) and Joe Barton (R-Texas) expressing concern over the new functionality, Facebook reaffirmed that it will be allowing third parties to request access to users' addresses and phone numbers.

wtf?

Weird. Pretty ballsy, but I'm sure they know that as pissed as anyone might get, it'll barely affect how many people use their service.

FB sheep will go right along with this, Spam's shitty... unless it comes from FB, then it's Kobe Beef. I talked to my neighbor about this story, they're in the FB cult. They said "it's no big deal" this same person wanted to castrate some Nigerian who kept sending them spam emails a few months ago.

Great so my mom who plays Farmville on that site has been putting in all sorts of personal info then if you need a phone # for pictures. I can't wait for the next round of laptop spyware & antivirus removal procedures.

It's actually really convenient when you use it for your friends contact list. You're not dependent on seeking out their current info when they update it themselves.

Still, most of my friends don't list anything more than their email address, and neither do I.

Well that really is the point. If you don't want your info listed, don't list it. Companies already have access to your info, that's why a donotcall list was made.

I use facebook but I'm not so stupid.
Why should I include my home address or phone number?
even if they didn't give any of your information to external apps (that you can't use if you don't accept the shitty terms), it's still easy-to-use by thieves.
Many people write when they go in holiday, or post pics from their hotel etc.
Most profiles are viewable by friends of friends or even publicy.
They have your address, they know you're away, they can phone to make sure no one is in the house if they have your landline number.
It's too easy to burglar retards, I say.

to give your friends the ability to find your phone number and call you?

facebook started out as a excellent way to find and get in contact with people which was very useful for college in its early stages, now its just completely commercialized and turned to complete shit

I didn't read the article yet? But where would it get your address? I didn't know there was a place for that in the profile.
Are they searching messages or wall posts?
Sucks for folks that throw a party and directions.

Great sound fantastic all I need facebook to do now, is to show my location at all times using my cell phone. :D
It would be great if it also shared my medical records so when I get sick all my friends can know – send my stuff since they now have my address.

Hm.. that gives my another idea how abut joining security cameras with facebook so when I go somwhere my friends can see me doing stuff shopping, parking, etc.

One of my coworkers posted one of those messages when Facebook make phone numbers viewable. I asked her why she had people "friended" and yet didn't want them able to view her phone number. She couldn't really explain.

Either way, if someone is my friend, they already have my number. I guess if they have a facebook app on their phone, fb already has my number as well, and possibly my addy.
