So I'm 2 pages into my news feed and then click on a link or a story......I hit "back" in my browser to get back to where I left off on my news feed but facebook takes be back to the beginning of my news feed rather than where I left off. This sucks. How can I fix this? Every other website known to man takes me back to where I left off. WTF?

AJAX navigation can be problematic like this. There isn't really a solution apart from the obvious, which darkswordsman already mentioned, to open items in new tabs.

Why not just open the link in a new tab?

Yeah you are right. It's just something I need to condition myself to do. I've spent so many years browing the web by clicking on links and expecting to return to where I left off. Opening in a new tab is not standard operating proceedure for me. I'll have to condition myself to start doing that. Or either set up my brower to do it be default. :)

Don't like it, don't use it.

Yeah that's one of the only things that annoys me about interactive AJAX pages. Otherwise most of what it brings to the table is positive. Love the more app like GUI interfaces it allows for. Gmail is a good example of both of these, can't go backwards reliably in a browser but makes for a fantastic UI!
