Facebook is sucking in your Android contacts, if you have FB app installed.

If you have FB app installed, it will take your contact list and send it to FB, then when you click contacts in FB, the phone numbers will be there for everyone in your PHONE's contact list, even for people who aren't on FB.

This is ridiculous, IMO, and a violation of privacy, even if they put some small print somewhere. I am never installing any FB app again. Oh, and here is the kicker, if you remove the contacts from your FB phonebook, it will "sync" the removal to your phone and remove it from your phone too.

http://www.facebook.com/contact_importer/remove_uploads.php?r=/phonebook

Remove Imported Contacts
Imported contacts are displayed on your Invites and Imported Contacts page and synced mobile contacts are displayed in your Facebook Phonebook. Contacts may be used to improve the quality of friend suggestions for you and your friends.
If you remove imported and synced contacts:
Friend suggestions for you and your friends may become less relevant.
Your phonebook will no longer include synced contacts, but will still display the contact info of friends who have included it on their profiles.
Note: Before you click Remove, you need to make sure syncing is switched off.
To do this, open the Facebook application on your iPhone, click the Friends icon in the main menu, then click Sync in the upper-right.

Make sure you disable FB sync before you remove the contacts.

I live contact syncing with the FB App, but only for those contacts I already have on my phone. The removal thing was a big reason why I stopped installing the FB app, took me a while to figure out why a few of my contacts were vanishing every time I switched ROMs.

Facebook is a for-profit private company in a barely regulated market. They can do whatever they want with your information.

ok so the only way to disable this is to remove it from FB first and then to turn off syncing.

Remember the original point of syncing on Android?

- You get to sync contact photos, so you don't need to run around to all your contacts and snap a photo of them to use.
- Their contact page also shows their latest FB statuses.

That's all. Now I have to lose all that because I don't want Facebook getting all my phone #s? Ridiculous Facebook.... Absolutely... dumb. Google Contacts is for everyone's cloud contacts. The only idea of Facebook sync was to pull FB info. No one really wanted to upload shit to them. Do they not get it? Fail.

Turn off sync first, then remove them from FB. Otherwise it'll sync the removal back to your phone. FB got it into it's mind that you want to manage your phone contacts on FB.
I just removed the app completely. Not really interested in finding out what else FB has in its mind.

For some reason there is a bug that will put a 1 in front of the number from the FB app. This causes text messages not to work on my Droid X. Has there been a fix for this yet?

For the people that does this, I have to add a second contact for them and then merge them. FB numbers can not be edited.

Unsync and resync. That's what I did for Facebook. What ended up happening was that it duplicated contacts or something. I never saw duplicate contacts on my contact list, and my GF would show up as my gf on my contacts list, but on my call log, if I hit her name it didn't show her pic, and it only showed half her profile... maybe like her Google+ but not the Facebook link.

Wheny ou have like 10 apps syncing and linking contacts (Twitter, Skype, Whatsapp, Facebook, Google+, etc) it gets to be a tangled mess. I unsynced Facebook and resycned one night and everything got restored.

This big list of numbers you’ve seen isn’t public, or isn’t any more public than each of the numbers is on its own – if your friend has a profile with a publicly displayed phone number, it’s going to be public regardless of what YOU do. Again note that these numbers come from Facebook, not your unconnected contacts book, certainly not if your contacts aren’t connected to Facebook. Also you might want to know that if you’ve ever typed your phone number anywhere on Facebook, it’s accessible, as the classic Tom Scott webpage “EVIL” shows quite clearly.

In summation: the numbers come from the users who have entered them themselves. No Facebook user that you didn’t allow the ability to see your number has access to your number. Keep yourself the safest by not entering the information you want kept secret by not posting it on the internet in the first place.

But the problem is it takes YOUR Android Contact list and it uploads to Facebook. It doesn't just sync it. 98% of my coworkers are NOT on my Facebook yet I see them on this phone list on Facebook. It basically made a copy of my contact list.

I have no problem with what Facebook did before and it was to match your friends list with your current contacts. Any #s that were listed publicly on Facebook were then combined with your phone book. That's fine, but this is not what's happening.

It's not so much that the list is public. It's not. But the idea of syncing was to match your contact list with Facebook. Now they're making this more of a 2 way sync. How is this necessary?
